Chapter Five

"We won!" Julie shrieked, running into their dorm room the next day, excitedly. Rosalind was sitting on her bed, going over some notes for the quiz she had the next day. She smiled at her roommate as she hugged her in congratulations. Julie took off her cheerleading uniform and quickly put on a dress. "The squad and I are heading out to celebrate. Want to come?"

"I would love to, but I have a quiz tomorrow," she responded, trying to smile. "Congrats though! I'm so happy for you!"

"Thanks," Julie smiled and she left their dorm room. Rosalind found it hard to concentrate on her study material, and she felt her stomach growling. She looked down at her iPhone and saw two texts. One from her mother, reminding her to shape up or she would gain more weight, and one from Lincoln asking her how she was. She tossed her phone aside, and headed down to the cafeteria to grab some dinner. She picked out a cheeseburger, a garden salad and a bottle of water. It was pretty busy for a Sunday night, so she slunk over to the back corner, sitting at a table by herself.

"Oh hey," she looked up to see Lexi, Lincoln's sister standing there, with her friend Amanda, the one who had insulted her in lecture the other day. "We missed you at the reunion last night."

"I kept Lincoln company though, don't worry," Amanda sneered at her, and Rosalind looked down. "We had a blast!"

"Good for you," Rosalind retorted, as she picked at her salad.

"See ya," Lexi smirked at her, and they left quickly.

"Bitches from campus," she heard an unfamiliar female voice behind her, and she looked over to see a familiar woman. "A pain in my ass."

"For sure," Rosalind agreed, smiling.

"I'm Tru," she introduced herself. "Or Trudy, but Tru is what I prefer to be called." Tru was curvy herself, and she was beautiful. She was biracial, with curly, blond spiral hair, bright blue eyes and legs that went on for days. Her outfit was very trendy, her make-up was flawless and she looked like she belonged on the cover of a magazine.

"I love your outfit," Rosalind complimented her, and Tru smiled.

"My mama is a fashion designer," Tru explained. "Where are you from?"

"Buffalo," she responded. "My mother is-is...mean." She felt guilty calling her mother that, but that was exactly what she was. Rosalind often wondered if she even loved her or ever wanted her in the first place. Sometimes, she wished she had never been born.

"What's your major?" Tru asked as she sketched in her art pad.

"Unknown," Rosalind responded. "You?"

"Fashion design," Tru responded, showing her the sketch she was working on. "This dress would look fabulous on you."

"It's pretty, but I doubt it," Rosalind blurted out, and Tru frowned.

"Hey Tru!" a group of women called her name, and Tru stood up.

"See you around," Tru smiled at her, and Rosalind smiled back. Tru walked with confidence, even with her curves. Rosalind envied her in a good way. She wished she could be as confident with her body as Tru was with hers. According to her mother though, she was a big disappointment and a complete failure. She finished off her dinner as her iPhone rang. She saw Lincoln's number flash across the screen.

"Hello?" she answered apprehensively, thinking about what her mother and Amanda had said.

"Hey," Lincoln sounded optimistic. "How are you feeling today?"

"Okay," she answered. "I just ran into Lexi and Amanda. Amanda said she kept you company at the reunion last night."

"For a while," Lincoln replied, shaking his head. "Trust me, Rosalind, she is no you."
