At first glance, the girl looked normal. But with closer examination, she looked pale, and solemn. Jodie stared at her, wide eyed. She wanted to run but she couldn't move. The girl gave her a confused look.
"Wait........" She started to speak. Her voice was echoey and faint. "Can you actually see me?" Afraid, Jodie nodded. The girl moved closer. She flinched. "But........that's impossible! You're lying!"
"I-I'm not........" Jodie moved closer to the girl. "Shouldn't you be in class?" She then noticed the cheerleader's outfit she was wearing. "Or at practice?"
"No........I can't leave this room." Jodie looked at her, confused.
"Why would I not be able to see you?" The girl looked at her with haunting eyes.
"I'm dead." Jodie shook her head. The antidepressant pills her mother was making her take must've caused her to hallucinate. Either that or she was insane.
"Dead........?" She sounded disbelieving in the girl's explanation.
"Yes!" The girl said, treating Jodie as if she were an infant. "I've been dead for years. How come you can see me?"
"The answer to that is simple. You don't exist!" She said as if she knew exactly what was happening.
"What?" The girl seemed confused and a little offended.
"You see, I must be insane. Therefore, I created you in my mind so I can have a friend." She sounded completely sure of her explanation. The girl shook her head.
"No, girl. I died in this bathroom, and now my spirit is speaking to you. You may be insane, but I have nothing to do with that." Jodie still didn't believe her.
"Nice try. Who did your makeup? It's very convincing."
"Believe me or not you're the only one I can talk to." She walked closer to Jodie. The atmosphere was thick around the girl, and Jodie could feel it. "What's your name?" The girl asked.
"Jodie.....and you?"
"Emily! Nice to meet you." She held out her hand to shake with Jodie. Jodie grabbed it. It was cold and her hand passed strength through it. Jodie stared in horror.
"W-Wait....you're a-actually-"
"Believe me now?" The girl smirked. Jodie jumped back in fear. This girl was actually a ghost? So she wasn't lying? She ran out of the bathroom, heading for class. Her face was paler than usual. She had a terrified expression on her face. Jodie walked back into the classroom. When she sat down, Mr. Penbur noticed her.
"Are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost!" Jodie's voice was monotone and somewhat shaky.
"Fine......." The teacher looked at her for a minute more, then continued speaking. Some students whispered about her, but most stared.
The rest of the day was a blur. Jodie couldn't stop thinking about that Emily girl. The bell rang at the end of the day, and she went to her locker to pack up. She sat down next to the chubby boy on the bus. He noticed her expression. "Bad day....?" He asked. She nodded robotically. He looked like he seemed to understand. "I got shoved into a locker, if that makes you feel better....." She shrugged.
"Thanks......" He nodded, smiling.
"I-I haven't properly introduced myself. Im Wyat......."
"Jodie." The bus stopped at the sign. She stood up and got off.
Jodie hopped up the stairs to her room. Turning on her computer, she heard a knock at her door. "Honey?" It was her father. "How was your first day of school?"
"Fine." She started typing. He moved down the hall. Jodie Googled her experience in the bathroom. "Can people see ghosts?" She searched. After articles and articles of research, she learned that the "whispered to" are people who were born with the ability to see ghosts. This trait went back to ancient Egypt when pharos used this power to pay respect to what they thought were the Egyptian gods Nut, and Rah. Jodie sighed.
"I'm one of the whispered to?" She laid on her bed and stared at the ceiling until she eventually fell asleep.
