Jodie woke up. She started to get dressed, throwing on a MCR t-shirt and jeans. As she walked down the stairs, she contemplated eating breakfast or not. She eventually decided not to, and put on some black converse.
The bus finally came to it's stop. Jodie got on, and like yesterday, there were no seats open besides the one by Wyat. Sitting next to him, she pulled her bag onto her lap. "Hi, Jodie!" He seemed excited to see her.
"Hey.." She waved slightly. He continued to talk.
"So, I was thinking that........since we've been sitting together for a couple days, maybe.......you'd like to be friends?" This question shocked her. No one ever asked to be her friend. She contemplated on what to say.
"Sure..." That word came out of her mouth quickly.
"Cool!" He smiled. She looked at the seat in front of her. The bus was approaching the school, and stopped. Jodie stood up. Wyat usually waited for other people to get off first, but he stood up next to her. She could tell he was a little more confident now that they were friends.
As she walked past the bathroom, she remembered yesterday. Emily. She had to go back there today. She had to talk to Emily again. Jodie opened her locker and started to un pack. The walk to first period was a slow one, but she finally made it to science.
The first ten minutes of class whizzed by, and Jodie could tell it was time. She raised her hand. "Yes?" Mr. Penbur called on her.
"May I please use the restroom?" As soon as he nodded she got up. The hallway was quiet, and empty. She finally approached the bathroom. Jodie's feet dragged. She turned and stood, facing the mirror like yesterday. Sure enough, Emily returned.
"Well, well, well! Look who came back!" She seemed un surprised. Jodie sighed nervously.
"Yep! I came to tell you I know what I am now........."
"The Whispered To? I should've known." She walked, no, floated over to Jodie, landing in front of her. Jodie noticed that this girl was extremely thin. Her hair was ragged, and dry. Her face was gaunt, and bony.
"Why are you so thin?" Jodie smacked her hand over her mouth, afraid she sounded rude. Emily only tilted her head.
"And then, we come to how I died........" She began,"They said, that I was too fat to join the team. Being the smart girl I am......was, I decided I should fix the problem and loose weight. At first, it was just jogging. Then, I stopped eating all together. I started passing out everyday, until......I was in here. I passed out and I guess.....never woke up again....." The last part was quiet. Emily now looked sad. Jodie put her hand on her shoulder, but it slipped right through.
"I-I'm sorry to hear that......." She looked at Jodie.
"Thanks.......that's sweet........" She floated back over to one stall. Jodie knew she was going to have to go back to class soon. She was going to say something she'd never said before, following Wyat's example.
"Let's be friends, k?" She walked out before Emily could answer.
The rest of her classes were boring. The almost silence was broken by the lunch bell. She made her way to the cafeteria. Yesterday, she was able to find a seat, but she wasn't so sure about today. Jodie got a tray of pizza, fruit, and milk. She shyly carried it around the cafeteria. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw someone waving at her. It, of course, was Wyat. He sat alone at a table. Jodie walked over to him and sat next to him. He smiled. "Hey, Jodie!"
"Hey."
"How's your day been?" She recalled the bathroom. She shrugged.
"Boring as fuck. What about you?"
"I got shoved into a locker again." Jodie turned her head quickly to him.
"Again? Who's doing this to you?"
"Matt Philips." He answered casually. Matt Philips, Jodie knew, was the tallest kid at their school. He picked on everyone, but for some reason, the fact that Wyat was his victim made her angry.
"Why would he do that to you?" Jodie's voice was concerned.
"I don't know. I think he just wants to be buddies!" He went back to eating his pizza. She put her hand on his shoulder. Her turned back to her, red cheeked. Jodie over looked that detail and started to speak, quietly.
"I don't think that's the case, bud........" His gaze saddened.
"I know......." He turned his head away from her. Lunch was almost over. She stood up, holding out her hand to help him up. He took it. His cheeks reddened again. Walking over to the trash can, they threw out their left overs and walked back to class.
The bell rang at the end of the day, and Jodie went to her locker and packed her things. She felt a tap on her shoulder. It was Wyat, his face red. She turned to face him.
"Hey....." He said.
"What's up?" She decided to give him a different response than usual.
"Do you want to come over later? To like.....play video games? Or whatever you want I don't really mind. As friends?" He stuttered.
"Ok...." She guess this was what friends did.
"Cool..." He started walking out of the building and to the busses. He stopped to wait for her. "You coming?" She quickly followed.
The bus ride was quiet. Wyat nudged her shoulder. "Since you're coming over, wanna get of at my stop?"
"Sure.." She guess it would be easier.
As they walked down the street, Jodie got out her phone. She texted her mother.
"Going 2 a frens house." Before she could respond, Jodie put her phone in her pocket and looked ahead. Wyat was walking in front of her. He finally stopped in front of a brick house.
"Here we are!" He walked up onto the porch. Jodie followed. Wyat pushed the door open and led her inside. The floors were hard wood and the walls were light purple. There were big open windows on what seemed like each wall. "Mom, I'm home!" He called. A woman with brown hair and blue eyes, like Wyat, came walking down the hallway. She smiled when she saw Jodie.
"Oh! Is this the girl from the bus? Hi, Im Bethany." She held out her hand. Jodie shook it.
"Jodie....." She shifted a little. Bethany kept smiling.
"Will you be staying for dinner, Jodie? We'd absolutely love to have you!" The woman's voice was pleasant and inviting. She looked at Wyat, and could see his embarrassed expression.
"Mom!" He groaned. His mother stopped talking.
"I'll give you a minute to think it over." She said, leaving. Wyat turned to Jodie.
"Come on let's go upstairs."
