Margalo and Violet are rivals, in the truest sense of the word. They've been that way since the second grade--at each other's throats over who's the prettiest, who's the smartest, who's the most talented, and probably most significantly, who Parker Spalding likes more. That is, until one day, their school burns down, leaving Violet dead and Margalo with an unhealthy obsession with fire.
Fast forward three years. Margalo is in the tenth grade, in a town she's lived in for just over a year. When she accidentally almost burns her house down, she's sent back to her hometown, Bellton--where her middle school sweetheart lives and her childhood enemy is buried--to live with her aunt and cousin. Margalo is focused on getting a new beginning, and possibly a place in Parker's heart. But when Violet returns as a ghost with some alarming news, everything changes.
