Mermaid Tales

i swam as fast as i could out of the city. being a mermaid isnt all its cracked up to be. we have such strict rules. tomorrow is my 17th birthday and i have to marry my fiance, zachariah. i mean sure, he is the most handsome merman in all of Coral City with his perfect muscles, brown hair, brown eyes, and a smile to die for, but i dont love him. when i was born my dad set me up with zachariah, since merfolk only marry for status. my parents didnt love each other. but then again my mom was killed by humans when i was little. 

i got to the caverns out side the city. my dad calls them the forbidden caverns since the sirens live in them. the sirens arent very friendly mermaids. they actually go up to the surface of the ocean. ive always admired their bravery. but what i most admire them for is that they lure humans into the depths and kill them. they are banned from the city, so maybe i can join forces with them. zachariah would try to come looking for me, im sure. he says we will fall in love after marriage. i dont believe him. i couldnt be in love with a merman who is always off at the castle while i stay home with children. i want adventure

the dark olive colored eyes belonging to shelby met me as i swam closer to the entrance of the cavern. shelby smiled at me, her long black hair flowing around her, "what brings you here?"

"i want to be one of you." i said firmly.

shelby giggled before doing a quick swim around me, "sorry doll, we dont accept random girls."

i folfed my arms across my chest, "im not leaving here."

shelbys sister swam up beside us. i had no clue what her name was, nor have i seen her in the city before. the sister looked at shelby and gave a smile, 'you have to prove yourselfworthy to be a siren.'

i nodded, "ill do it. whats the task?"

shelbys sister smiled again, "you have to easily lure a human to our waters."
