Ridaz's POV
My heart raced as my felt her soft skin against my hand. Her hair was an awe to me, yet I never have interacted with a human before, let alone a pirate. Feeling my mind think about my possible freedom from this forsaken sea, I was excited to finally have the courage to go upon shore... but was I ready for it? I thought to myself about the dangers of being a siren up on land, yet the visions of me being caught for my scales rushed through my head and the excitement flew away as if it was never there.
I wish I could have introduced myself, but you know how it is... pirates are afraid of us just like how we're afraid of them. The stories they tell about our ancestors, the way they use us, the way they are enchanted by us, the way we murder them... it sickens me to think I am apart of a species of killers, abusing their beauty and voices just to follow in the fins of their ancestors. Yet I had enough of following their words... I wanted to be able to express myself without being judged by what I am.
I saw behind a rock and made sure the girl was still alive, but as I was about to move forward, she arose from her unconscious state and started to mumble, yet all I heard was "Melissa" ... such a beautiful name... She looked in my direction and I sank behind the rock to not be noticed, the girl looked like she forgot something. That ship was caught in the storm, maybe she lost a sibling, or a love. Pushing the thought of her family being caught in the storm, I dove back into the crystal clear ocean and made my way back to the siren kingdom, where I would have to explain my absence to my mother, the queen.
Yes, big plot twist, I'm the prince of the sirens and soon to be ruler, yada yada yada. She never listens to me, always saying how I'm getting closer to the age of mating and how I need to find a mate before it's too late. But I don't want any of that, it's only a matter of time before I leave this awful place and move on with my life, my life, not hers. Thinking about being married to someone I rarely know makes me sick, let alone having to mate with them and become the ruler. But how would everyone think of their king having vivid pink scales? Would they mock me? Would they try to overthrow me? These are the things I wish I could stop thinking about, but every time I look at the others, I know I don't fit in, that's why I have to make it so I don't fit in.
Feeling a whirlpool of feelings, I slowly swim back to my home, until I was stopped by a familiar voice that I was glad to hear.
"Ridazzz! Hey! Buddy! What's the matter?" said Emma, my only friend in this dreadful place. She is like me, sort of, having a retainer and a slight lisp. She doesn't care about mating either, she cares about the environment and all that stuff. It's glad to have someone that understands what you're talking about. I turn around and swim towards her, her large glasses, bob cut hair, and light green scales are what makes her look great. People did pick on her, but they stopped because they just got bored of her, except for Connor.
"Just been out for a while."
"A while!? You've been gone for hours!" she said, trying to make the 's' sound correctly.
I sigh and rub the back of my head, "Well... I had to do something."
She looked at me and narrowed her eyes, looking me up and down, then took my hand.
"Hey hey hey! Watch it!" I shout as I am jerked forward, I knew she was onto me. She finally let go of my hand and crossed her arms.
"Ridaz, have you been out near the harbor again?"
She knew, I couldn't lie to her, nor could I even. She can read people like a book, it was scary.
"Yes I was out by the harbor-"
"Riz! You know how dangerous it is over there! All those sailors and pirates!"
"Oh don't go saying you believe the tales, now. You're becoming like the rest, thinking that humans are all bad and we must be like our ancestors and kill them before they kill us."
"Hmph... Well your mother has been worried sick. She came knocking to my door, asking if you were here."
"Ugh..." I sighed and looked behind Emma, and the idea popped in my head.
"Emma, you're gonna help me escape."
"WHAT!?"
"Sh sh sh shhh! You know what will happen if I go back to them, you gotta help me sneak out of here. I can't stand this place anymore! Please Emma, do it for your friend." I pleaded.
She thought for a moment and nodded, "Fine, but you owe me. I'll unlock the window to your room and you can sneak in and grab your stuff and get out."
"But how are you gonna do that?"
"Trust me." and just like that, she swam off to the castle.
After a few moments, I was able to sneak into the room and grab my things, putting them into brown satchel and grabbing my staff. I looked back at her and frowned, but she has a smile on her face. She hugged me goodbye and I headed out to the harbor. Finally feeling free, I couldn't help but smile and race towards the docks. I peered my head out of the water and put my bag and staff onto a nearby tree branch, yet to my surprise, the pirate I saved was sitting there. Her hair glimmering in the sunlight, her pale skin, her blue eyes, it was like I was staring at an angel, that is until I noticed her looking right at me.
"Ello...?" she said and my heart froze, and I just stayed put.
