A/N: This is based off a My Chemical Romance song. The song really just reminded me of these two and their WW2 story. Enjoy.
Remnants of the old pub flew about as the wind picked up around Steve, as he sat by the destroyed bar he and his friends had sat at weeks before.
He had just lost one of his friends.
His closest friend, best best friend...
His Bucky...
"It wasn't your fault, Steve." Peggy reassured him. He was lucky to have Peggy. She was one of the few people who stuck by him before he had been given the serum. Another one of those few was, of course, Bucky. Bucky had been by his side since they were children, and had stayed there no matter what.
"Bucky was everything, he did everything for me, and I let him fall." Steve choked back tears as he spoke.
"You did all you could, Steve. That's all your friend would've wanted."
"But you know what, I feel like it shouldn't have ended there, you know, like there's so many things that he's never told me, I just feel that there's something missing." Steve was getting agitated now, but all Peggy could do was talk.
"Then think of what memories you have got with him, all the happy moments in his life." Peggy struggled, she wasn't very experienced in calming super soldiers.
"All those smiles will ever do now, is haunt me, I can't think of him happy, because I know I'll never see him like that again. He's never coming back, Peggy, he's not coming back to me," Steve was now full on crying, tears streaming down his cheeks, his eyes all red and puffy, "He's never coming home, Peggy."
"I know, Steve, but he wouldn't want you to be like this. All those times he sat with you and looked after you so you wouldn't break, he kept you so strong, Steve, let him carry on doing just that, by keeping him alive in your mind and heart, and keep on fighting HYDRA, because that's what he'd want, to know you're still that strong-hearted man you were before." Peggy breathed, hoping that speech had worked.
Steve sniffed, "Yeah, you're right, I can't fail him now just because he's gone. Thank you, Peggy." He wiped away his tears, and got back to work, Bucky never leaving his mind.
