The last thing I can remember, I was eating dinner with my mother and Elizabeth, my little sister, whom I love to call Beth. We were laughing and having a great time, a usual thing. My little family and I were as close as close can be. Every time I was with both of them, I couldn’t help but smile; I was home as long as I was with them.
Then it all went black. All I could hear was the frantic screams of my mother and sister as we were thrown into bags and shoved in what I could only assume was a tiny car. I could hear Beth’s frantic breaths and cries.“Don’t worry Beth,” I said softly,” I will keep you and mom safe.” I heard someone turn towards me,” Oh put a sock in it, family man!” The man yelled and struck my head. I felt everything slipping from me, I could’ve sworn that I was dying.
Is this the end for me?
I drowsily woke up, my mother and sister tied up beside me. I wriggled around, trying to break the rope bonds that confined me, but I didn’t have the strength. I started to shout,”Help! Someone, Please, help us!” The only thing I could hear was some distant laughing. I attempted to move, but I had been tied just as my family. I struggled against the thick rope. All I could think of was making sure that my family didn’t get hurt.
“Struggling is useless Jason.” A dark figure said,” You have quite a heavy soul my boy, I had a lot of hell dragging you from the river. Something traumatic must’ve happened to you when you were young,” He grinned at me as if he already knew the answer. I looked to this man,” What the hell do you want from me?” I spat bitterly,” Why did you take my family and me?”
He simply smiled,”I have a proposition for you Jason. If your willing to help me, which I think you might be.” I looked up in disgust,” How do you know my name?” I ask,” and why do you need me?” The man walked out of the shadows, revealing a sly grin plastered to his face. “ Come on son, should you be speaking that way to your father?” he asked with arms open as if he wanted a hug. I wanted nothing but to be away from this man.
I did not know if he was telling the truth, if I was dreaming, or if the man in the car had actually killed me. How could I believe any of this? Is this what Purgatory is like? I know I have not had the most religious life, but I’ll change, please, let me stay where my mother and sister are. But, if I must die, let them live. If there’s a God above, let them live.
I desperately looked to my mother. This man couldn’t be my father, she’d always told me that he left us flat and went to Europe with another woman. “ Let me help to convince you that I’m telling the truth...” he said to me, seeing the confusion on my face. He snapped his fingers and the ropes that had entangled me turned to black smoke. I coughed, feeling the smoke fill my lungs. I almost passed out from the strong scent, I couldn’t even think straight.
He grabbed my shoulder and led me into another room, it looked like one of the police interrogation rooms that I’ve seen on TV before. I stood awkwardly in the room, feeling like a child’s toy in a room full of tools. So out of place. The man looked at me,” Hmm, perhaps a more comfortable atmosphere.” He suggested, and snapped his fingers. The room flashed before my eyes, turning into what looked like a black, sleek, and modern living room. The man sat down in a tall black chair.
“Now I suppose you’re wondering what I want from you,” he grinned and looked at me, still awkwardly standing. He lifted his hand and brought it down, I felt my body going down and forcing me into the leather couch. I looked up scared,” There’s no reason to panic Jason,” He said calmly as snakelike creatures popped from the sofa, wrapping around my wrists. “What the hell is going on?” I ask desperately. The snakes around my wrists hissed to me, nipping towards my fingers. I looked down in terror; “If I am to die,” I prayed,” let me die now. Please, don’t prolong this more than you must.”
