The only thing worse than being the new kid at school, is being the new kid that's late to school. I walked into the office which was the first room that was all glass, probably so they could keep track of who was trying to sneak out. Typical school. I stepped into the glass room, instantly attacked by the smell of cinnamon. There was a small blonde lady sitting behind a computer typing along looking up at me briefly.

"How can I help you?" Not one glance, she was too involved in whatever she was typing.

"Um, can I get my schedule? I'm kind of new here." I glanced around noticing someone walk in.

"Your Kendall, right?" She questioned still glued to the screen.

"Uh, yes ma'am." The copier next to her came alive, making weird noises as it did. I noticed the kid that walked in by the printer. He was leaning over the counter talking to another lady. He was tall with long legs and a lanky torso. He wore a white and blue plaid button down flannel with khaki cargo pants and Sperrys. As I moved my eyes up towards his face he turned and looked at me, obviously feeling me checking him out. I blushed as I looked back at the lady who had now stopped typing and was retrieving my schedule. She held it firmly in her hands, reading over it as to make sure it was correct.

"John Luke, what class did you come from?" That's an unusual name but I guess it suited him well.

"Science." He had a deep but light voice and his southern accent was easily noticeable.

"Looks like you have the same class, just follow John Luke out, and he'll show you the way." The lady handed over my schedule and finally smiled at me.

"And welcome to Ouachita Christian."

"Thank you" I replied and turned to look at John Luke who smiled at me, his deep dimples appearing as he held the door open so I could go first. We walked side by side down the hallway not saying a word to each other. I didn't know what to say, I mean minutes ago he caught me checking him out. What am I supposed to say? Nice face? No, that would mortify me even more. Okay I'll just ask him does he play sports? But what if he doesn't and the conversation is killed before it even started. How about how do you like it here? Okay, that's good. Right as I was opening my mouth John Luke snuck a glance at me, making me shut up again. I don't know why I couldn't speak, no matter how hard I tried to open my mouth my voice just died on me. His brown eyes looked like a pool of chocolate and was the perfect match to his dark brown hair and big toothy smile.

"So it's your first day?" He asked glancing at me again and then setting his gaze ahead.

"Yeah, and I'm late so that makes it better." I sarcastically stated. An airy chuckle escaped his lips making me smile.

"It's your first day, the teachers don't really mind since your new." We turned down a hallway and walked to a big wooden door. He put his hand on it about to turn the nob but looked back at me.

"Are you ready?" He questioned with a smirk on his face.

"If I say no can I go home?" I joked and he chuckled again.

"If only it worked that way." He opened the door and walked in but also held it open for me. I walked into the big classroom. The teacher, who was a short Indian lady with long black hair and almond shaped eyes, was in the front of the room. Her eyes settled on me before going to John Luke then landing back on me.

"You should be Camden, right" She asked, her accent thick.

"Yes ma'am." I replied looking at the class who was staring back at me.

"Take any seat you like, we're just talking about the flow of electricity through a current." I nodded and made my way to the center of the class, to an empty seat between a boy wearing a jersey and another boy with his head on his desk, asleep. John Luke spoke to the teacher about something in a hushed voice before retreating to the back where his note book lay open and his back pack on the table.

"As I was saying, the current in a circuit from a dry cell does not flow from positive to negative. It flows from negative to positive because..." I stopped paying attention after that, noticing that John Luke was writing things, I decided that would be best for me too, so I wrote what was on the board, and after I was finished with that, I wrote about my new house, and after that I wrote about how much I wanted to go home, and I wrote and wrote and wrote until I felt someone behind me poke me. I turned around the see a red headed girl look at me and then look at the desk. I followed her eyes until I saw that she was moving around a note under her desk. She dropped it and looked up at me, telling me with her eyes that it was meant for me. I quickly dropped my pen and reached under the desk to retrieve the note and the pen. When I turned back around everything was the same, the teacher was lecturing the class and some people paid attention while everyone else slept. I unfolded the note, and was greeted with slanted handwriting.

Since your new here I was thinking I could show you around school, I'll walk you to your classes, and you can sit with me at lunch. You'll like it here in West Monroe, it's kind of boring but the people here are great. You'll also need to know some survival skills for this class. 1: Never sleep, she'll take a picture and send it to your parents. 2: Whatever is on the board will be on the test. 3: Always be polite, she hates disrespectful students and won't hesitate to fail you because of it. 4: Always stay on task or at least look like you are (cause I'm really not right now and if you're reading this note then you aren't either so look up real quick, nod and pretend to write something down.)

I did as the note said and the teacher noticed, a small smile growing on her face. I then returned to the piece of paper and continued to read.

And lastly, always study, everything you will ever need to know is in the book and we go through a chapter every three days so be prepared for fast pase. I'll meet you outside your classroom after every period so don't go anyway, by the way, it's okay to talk. You seem kind of shy so you don't have to be. See you after class.

Love,

John Luke
