The second the bell rang we all grabbed our stuff and rushed out the door. I found out why when I saw how the students filled the hallways making it impossible to see anyone which meant I would have a hard time looking for John Luke. I stood with my back against the lockers as I watched everyone from science class enter the sea of people. The kids scattered everywhere, some stopped to talk to friends, and others rushed to class. A group of teens looked over at me, probably noticing that I was new. The mixture of boys and girls turned back around conversing with each other before moving across the hall towards my direction. A black haired girl was the first to approach, she was really pretty with round, dark brown eyes and a wide sweet smile.
"Hey I'm Kolby" The black haired girl stuck out her hand for me to shake as she spoke.
"I'm Camden, I'm kind of new here." For some reason I pointed to the ceiling instead of shaking her hand. She look at me strangely, tilting her head to the side, as if she looked at me from a different angle then she'd get what I was doing. I slowly gave my hand to her and lightly shook it.
"Well look-y what we have here." She spoke in a joking tone as she looked past me.
I turned my head and saw John Luke standing there with his hands in his pockets smiling.
"Welcoming Camden I see?" John Luke leaned down and hugged her. The smile on her face grew bigger and she nodded.
"I just wanted to get to her before you did but apparently I'm too late."
"Gotta be faster there, you're slackin'"
I awkwardly stood there watching the encounter between the two, the way Kolby would throw her head back and laugh or she would touch his arm every chance she got while John Luke smiled down at her. I felt weird being in the middle of it, I felt as if I was intruding on their flirt fest.
I slowly walked away, giving them their time together. I made my way down the hallway looking at my slip of paper that had my schedule. I had current issues next. Well this should be fun.
The rest of the day flew by, John Luke eventually caught up to me and did as he said he would. He escorted me to every one of my classes and even sat by me at lunch. His friends joined us, including his sister, Sadie. And with her along came Cole and Kolby. They were all sophomores along with me. They asked me basic questions like where was I from, why did I move here, and so on. I stayed quiet most of the lunch, stuck in my own thoughts that were far more interesting than the conversation of football and who's dating who. I couldn't help but notice everyone sneaking a peek at our table, but quickly turning back around to gossip when I made eye contact with them. I felt like I was in my old school, with everyone gossiping and whispering around you. Snickering at every little thing you did.
"You okay?" John Luke whispered nudging me with his elbow lightly. I nodded and brought myself back down to earth, listening to Cole talk about how much he hates school food, as he flicked a piece of lettuce off his tray
Turns out John Luke and I had study hall together also. Sadie and I had Economics together. She was pretty nice and looked exactly like John Luke except well, she's a girl. They offered to drive me home but I declined, I took the bus with the loud and hyper kids. Automatically regretting my decision when I did. I was the last one off of the bus, and it felt really good to get off of that sweat machine.
I walked in through the door of the house only to be greeted with the fine smell of my mother's home made macaroni that she only made on special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I trudged up the stairs with my backpack still on my back, making it harder to walk lightly. As soon as I reached the top of the stairs my mom squealed.
"How was your day? Did you make friends? Did you have fun? Tell me everything!" She jumped up and down while clapping her hands. Sometimes my mother acts like my sister because she never actually grew up. She thinks she's still on her 20's, my dad thinks it's a mid-life crisis, I think she's just loosing it.
"My day was fine, I made friends, and no, school is not fun." I stated as I dropped my bag on the floor and made my way to the egg chair were I sat myself.
"Well was there any cute guys?" She raised her eyebrows and lowered them over and over again. My face flushed and I tried to hold back a smile.
"Oh my gosh you did!" She cheered and leaned herself closer to me only being separated by the counter top.
I shook my head and took a peach from the fruit bowl and bit into it. I was greeted with sweet Georgia nectar, which was actually better in Georgia but the peach wasn't that bad.
"Tell me! Don't keep me in the dark, I'm a cool mom." She nodded. I think she was actually trying to convince herself instead of me.
"Tell you what?" My dad's voice echoed as he stepped in from the outside balcony.
"Nothing!" I said too quickly for comfort. His eyes narrowed in on mine as if he could read my mind by simply doing that.
"She met a boy." My mom blabbed, obviously still excited.
"Is this true?" He asked taking a seat beside me. I could tell he was about to go into papa bear mode, the whole, you aren't allowed to date while my mom disagrees with him and there's another fight.
"Yes, but there are a hundred boys there. I'm focusing on my classes and making good grades, not making relationships, don't worry." I took another bite of my peach and jumped off the counter, heading straight for my room.
"Dinner will be ready in 10!" My mom called after me. I didn't acknowledge her I just kept walking and closed my door lightly behind me glad to create some space between my parents and myself.
