"So, what should we watch?" Leo Valdez asked the small blonde sitting next to him on the sofa.
He pointed the remote at the TV, grinning manically. "Mean girls? Don't sixteen year old girls like that?"
Tris Prior gave him a skeptical look. "I'm not your average sixteen year old girl."
"I guess not," Leo said with a laugh, "so that's a no then. Shame. I wanted to watch that."
Tris raised an eyebrow but a smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
That morning when Leo and Tris had been told that they would be spending a "bonding" day together, Leo hadn't been too thrilled. He figured that him and serious, smart Tris would have nothing in common, except their height. But that was exactly why they needed a day together, at least that's what Percy Jackson had yelled while he, Annabeth, Piper, Jason, Tobias and Christina ran out of the house laughing. Leo supposed that's what he got for being the seventh wheel.
Leo flicked through Netflix looking for something until Tris stopped him with a yell.
"The Fault In Our Stars! Yes! I loved the book!"
It was Leo's turn to raise an eyebrow. "I am not watching that romance with you woman. You have a boyfriend remember."
"But Tobias hates romance movies. I'm surprised that they weren't in his fear landscape."
Leo chuckled. Tris had already told him about fear landscapes, so this joke made sense to him. Tris had told him quite a bit about her life. She had almost looked like she wanted to cry when she talked about her mother and father. Leo could relate to loosing someone he cared about too. He had more in common with Tris than he had realised at first. But still, he had glossed over his fire powers. Leo was still ashamed of those.
"Please." Tris whined, snapping Leo back to reality.
"Fine." With a sigh he caved in.
"Wait!" Tris yelled. "We don't have popcorn. Popcorn is the most essential part of the movie."
"Agreed shorty. I'll go see if I can find any." Leo said, grinning.
Leo had taken to calling Tris shorty, just for the reaction even though they were pretty much the same height, only an inch between them.
"Ok, tall." She said with an eye roll.
Leo gave her an eye roll back and headed into the kitchen to look for popcorn. He found a packet of blue microwave popcorn in the back of a cupboard and popped it into the microwave. 'Where do you even get blue popcorn from?' half of Leo's brain wondered. Percy Jackson had a problem. That kid was obsessed with blue food.
A couple of minutes later, a ping signalled the popcorn was ready. Leo poured the blue explosion into a bowl and headed back to the front room where Tris was waiting.
"Why is the popcorn blue?" She asked questioningly.
"Percy has a problem with blue food." Leo said trying not to laugh at her puzzled expression.
There was a pause.
"It's still popcorn." Tris decided eventually with a shrug and pulled the bowl out of Leo's hands.
"Hey! I thought Abnegation was meant to share?" He complained.
Tris had already explained the factions to him but Leo had sensed she was holding something back. But so was he.
"I'm Dauntless. Remember?" She smiled but Leo heard something heavy in her voice. "Anyway let's start the film."
"Good idea." Leo hit the play button on the remote, eager to move on from the touchy topic.
Ten minutes into the movie and Tris had finished half the popcorn.
"Time to share?" Leo asked but only received a 'shush' in reply.
Reaching over he tried to grab the popcorn out of her hands but instead his weight caught her by surprise and they tumbled off the couch, Leo landing on top of Tris, his face inches from hers. The popcorn spilled across the carpet. For a few moments they stared, embarrassed, at each other. But then they saw the funny side of the awkward situation and burst out laughing. That was when the door opened.
"You sound like you're having fun." Tobias's low, powerful voice echoed around the room but abruptly cut off when he saw Leo on top of Tris.
Leo hurriedly pushed himself off Tris, his cheeks burning.
"Tris." Tobias said flatly.
"Tobias that wasn't what it looked like. We just fell and-"
"I don't want to hear it Tris." Tobias cut her off, his gaze darting around the room, avoiding Leo and Tris completely. It fixed on the screen where Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace had just decided it would be an appropriate moment to kiss.
Jason entered the room, laughing loudly, followed by the others, but stopped as soon as he saw the expressions on Leo, Tris and Tobias's faces. The laughing stopped.
"What's going on?" Annabeth pushed to the front and asked.
"It doesn't matter," Tobias sighed, "excuse me."
And with that he shoved past the crowd at the door.
"Tobias, wait." Tris called but he was already gone.
The sound of the front door opening and closing cut through the awkward silence.
"I'll get him." Christina said quietly from the back of the group and there was the sound of her footsteps retreating.
"Me too." Tris said, sounding like she was holding back tears.
The group of suspicious demigods at the door parted to let Tris pass through and then Leo had four pairs of eyes fixing him with accusing glares, while the Fault In Our Stars blared in the background.
Leo wished he had the power to sink into the ground. For a moment he was envious of Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, for his shadow-travelling powers. He could use those right now. Leo stared at the ground. He felt terrible.
