‘I hear you reported a man,’ He told Lea.

She looked at her hands. This was the second time she was in His office in a very short space of time. It wasn’t usual. After the guard had escorted the strange man away, she had been given her next task and completed it and now she was back in Headquarters, inside his office again.

She waited for Him to continue, knowing it was best to answer to direct questions only in His presence.

‘What did he look like?’ He asked.

‘He was a very…. Average looking man,’ Lea told Him. ‘Average height. Dark brown, short hair. Couple of day’s worth of stubble. Very dark eyes. Angular face.’

‘That seems about right,’ He agreed. They both knew that He hadn’t asked the question because He was curious about the man, or needed to know what he looked like, but because He wanted to confirm that they were talking about the same man. ‘And did you recognise him?’

‘No,’ she said. ‘I’d never seen him around before.’

‘And why did you report him?’

‘He was….’ Lea didn’t know how to describe the situation. ‘I just found him….a little weird. He asked me if I was tired. And he said my name, I never told him my name.’

He gazed at her. ‘Hm. That is odd,’ He agreed. ‘But we haven’t found anything wrong with him, we checked and checked and there seemed nothing unusual. Please do inform me if anything like this happens again.’

     ‘Of course sir.’

‘Your next task is a big one, have you been told it?’

     ‘Yes,’ Lea nodded. ‘But…sir?’

     ‘Yes?’

‘I’m not sure if I can do it,’ she admitted.

‘Why not? You’ve done it before,’ He pointed out.

     ‘No I haven’t!’

‘Yes you have. You have completed countless tasks which have lead to this.’

‘But I’ve never actually done it with my own hands,’ she told him, desperately trying to find a way out of it.

‘Lea, you know that tasks are non-negotiable,’ He reminded her, almost as if He was reading her thoughts. ‘The same rules apply for this as they do for any other task: take as long as you want, but do not come back until it is done.’

He waved His hand at her and she stood and walked out, trying not to hyperventilate.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She went to the Rest Room first, figuring that the longer she took to leave Headquarters, the longer it would be before she had to do this task. Her companions were all there except Fiona. This didn’t surprise Lea, as Fiona was probably still completing her task, slow as usual.

She approached her group who were huddled together in their usual corner, Isabelle whispering ferociously at the other two, who looked completely uninterested.

‘Did you hear?’ Isabelle hissed as Lea sat down next to Brian.

‘Hear what?’ Lea asked loudly, ignoring Isabelle’s lowered voice.

     ‘About Fiona!’ Isabelle cried.

Those two words made Lea’s stomach clenched tightly. There were only two types of news you could hear about someone: they were ready or they had been taken. Lea doubted Fiona was ready.

She inhaled sharply. ‘She was taken wasn’t she?’ she managed to whisper.

Brian put his hand on her arm. ‘I’m sorry,’ he told her. ‘I know you liked her a lot.’ Lea smiled at Brian, trying to be brave, but she felt like she could cry.

She wanted to cry, she felt that Fiona deserved at least that, they didn’t know what being taken involved, but it was considered worse than death. But Lea couldn’t do it. Nothing came out of her eyes.

‘We all knew it was going to happen at some point,’ Isabelle said. ‘That was blatantly obvious, right from the beginning.’

‘It’s her own fault,’ Daniel joined in. ‘She came back without having completed her task.’

Lea sighed; Daniel didn’t even have the courtesy to pretend he cared. She almost disliked him more than Isabelle, at least she knew she was a bitch, Daniel acted like he was the greatest person in the world.

‘How did you find out?’ Lea asked, trying to control her anger.

Isabelle smirked. ‘I have my ways,’ she told them. ‘Unlike you, I do socialize with others. Lord knows why He stuck me with you lot of dull people.’

Lea looked at Brian and he rolled his eyes at her, they both knew why He had stuck her with them: they were the only group of people decent enough to put up with her, anyone else would have strangled her by now.

So guys what do you think? What is the task that He gave Lea? Hope you didn't get too attached to Fiona, cause she's gone...
