Prologue
I sat alone on my cold bed as the shadows moved back and forth outside my window, tree branches scraping the glass as hail pelted down from the dark night sky and lightning strunck in close feilds, thunder rumbling like the stomache of a monster. I pulled the covers closer to me as I caught a glimpse of movement in our back yard.
'calm down nothing's there' , I whispered to myself as my heart began to thud harder in my chest. I let out a small gasp as the shadow moved once again, I squinted trying to get a better look, lightening struck at just the right time to light up a young man's figure. I leaped out of bed and ran down the hall to my parents room remembering too late that they were away all weekend, while I was in their room I grabbed the phone and a bat. I dialed in 911 and held the phone up to my ear only to hear a robotic voice say the line is not connected.
'Damn the powers out' , I whispered to myself once again. I ran back to my room and lean my head in the door way, the shadow had gone there was nothing there. I walked across the hall to the top of the stairs, as quietly as I could I made my way down to the kitchen, once my feet touched the smooth wood floor the air around me seemed to go icy cold as if there were a prescence near by. I walked further into the unlit kitchen, my heart skipped a beat as the side door's handle rattled, I looked up through the glass pane in the top half of the door and even though I was at the other end of the room more lightening lit up a hooded figure. The rattling became more intense but was barely audiable over the thunder and my brother's snoring.
'Kyle!', I let out in a gasp, I had completely forgotten my brother and his friend were in the living room having a sleep over or something. As fast as I could I ran into the other room and dropped to my knees beside Kyle, his Friend, Alexander was on the other couch snoring as loudly as Kyle was.
"Kyle! Kyle wake up!!", I yelled waking up his friend in the process.
"Go away Natasha", he mumbled and turned over.
"Kyle wake up someone's trying to break in!", I yelled once again as he shoved me off.
"Your imagining it now go to bed!", he groaned and pulled a pillow over his head. Sometimes he really pissed me off, I was sixteen, only one year younger but he treated me like I was four. My cheeks flush in rage as he waved me off like he was the queen, I grabbed the quilt from underneath him and pulled it off of the couch resulting in him ending up on the floor.
"HEY!!", he was pissed. he rose to his full height towering over me.
"Your up now. Go check it out!", I ordered as I pushed the bat to his chest. He might be captain of the football team at school but I could still push him around.
"Whatever", he mumbled as he snatched the bat from my hands and slumped toward the kitchen. I looked over to his friend who had a cute smirk on his face.
"What are you looking at?", I questioned not in the mood for an actuall conversation, inside I was just begging that he didn't have a smartass reply. I was tired and when I'm tired it's like visiting the Godfather at two in the morning, not pretty.
"You look like you can handle yourself", he noted and got up to follow Kyle's direction.
"Thanks", I mumbled as he walked past in his boxers and loose 'Slip Knot' tee I blushed at the compliment.
"A bit pushy though", he said as he made his way further out of the living room.
"Prick", I mumbled under my breath in reply. We got into the kitchen to find Kyle with his head in the fridge, I looked over in the corner to the side door where the bat was leaning on the wall.
"Well no one was there, so all I have to say now is I told you so", Kyle said triumphantly as he pulled a can of beer out of the fridge and threw one to Alexander. Soon he was in the pantry and dug out a bag of chips and put them on the kitchen table, he went back into the pantry and pulled out a bag of marshmallows and threw them to me.
"Here. Eat these and stop bothering me", he said, I looked down at the packet and rolled my eyes at his remark.
"Dickhead", I said, Alexander chuckled as he open his beer but Kyle just glared.
"What?", I said sweet and innocently.
"Go to bed", Kyle said as he death glared me.
"Okay I'll let you get back to your slumber party", I said cheekily moving toward the stairs.
"NATASHA I'M GUNNA KI-", he began.
"Don't get your knickers in a knot I'm going", I cut him off as his face turned red with rage. He flipped me off and started a coversation with Alexander who had been giggling like a little girl the entire time while he chugged his beer. I walked up the stairs and toward my bedroom, I lifted my head when I reached the door and my heart seemed to stop entirely, with their back to me a hooded figure was going through my drawers. I heard him let out a sickening chuckle as he lifted one of my bra's in front of his face, from the tone of his voice he sounded like he was around Kyle's age. I shifted my weight from one foot to another, bad move. As soon as I did a board sqeaked and the hooded figure straightened up he put down what he had in his hand and slowly turned around, I looked to where his face should've been but he was wearing a hockey mask.
"Hey, Baby", he snickered, my heart started again with adrenaline pumping through it. I slammed the door shut and ran down the stairs almost tripping three times.
"He's back!", I yelled as I reached the doorway of the living room.
"He's in my room!", I managed to huff out. Kyle was about to yell at me for being stupid but was stopped by a loud bang from upstairs, he gave me a look that meant hide, before he went to grab the bat.
"Natasha, quick, hide here", Alexander said in a hushed tone motioning toward a large box we usually used to store louge pillows, I hopped in as soon as he emtyed it. He closed the lid after me and I heard his footsteps get further in seconds. The darkness seemed to close in on me as I heard muffled voices, it was Kyle and Alexander they had re-entered the room but I couldn't hear the intruder. I lifted the lid to see the Intruder entering the room but this time he was holding something, I held my breath as the light shone off of it. It was a knife. I closed the slightly open lid and dropped my chin to my chest as tears silently fell from my eyes. I was so worried and I had no idea so I did the first thing that came to mind, I prayed. I prayed that this was all just a bad dream and that I would wake up soon, because I didn't want to think about what might of happened next...
