Chapter 29

"Deangelo!" Jo-Ann breathed, shocked to see the boy on the wrong side of the ring of fire. "I had a feeling something was wrong." She looked angrily at him as he continued to cry and began mumbling Italian sentence fragments.

"I, too, knew this was a trap." Sherlock told her, staring at Deangelo and noting what he was mumbling.

"You knew and still went along?!" Jo-Ann questioned, looking around to try to spot something in the darkness.

"Massimo is captured here, that is true. The only thing that was a lie is that we would be alone." He concluded, leaving the doctor confused.

"Right you are, Sherlock Holmes!" a voice shouted and echoed throughout the room. Flames erupted from different spots in the room, torches were being lit. When the light settled from the brightness of first ignition, the large room came into focus. It was a cave like area, smoothed over with dried clay that cruelly shaped into what resembled a small coliseum. Sherlock and Jo-Ann quickly looked around until their eyes landed on the stairs the directly in front of them. Up the clay, slightly misshapen steps, was a throne. It was not made of expensive materials a throne should be, but it was made from the same clay of the ground. It was distorted, dirty, and cruel, just like the man sitting upon it. Rizzotti's face twisted into a smile as he looked too relaxed on the throne. To Sherlock's fury, the man on his left was Maciullato who hurt the doctor, and to Jo-Ann's distress, the man to his right was a bound Massimo who looked beaten. The room was now dimly lit, revealing other teenage boys lined up against the walls. Deangelo tried to stop his tears, but could only wipe them away as more flowed.

"Thank you for cooperating." Rizzotti smiled. "I was wondering how much I would have to make this one scream until Deangelo agreed to fetch you." He said like it was the most casual thing in the world as he gripped Massimo's hair and pushed him to the side. Massimo did nothing in reaction as he kneeled by the throne, bleeding from his face that hung.

"Get away from him you son of a b*tch!" Jo-Ann yelled as she stomped closer to the steps leading up to his throne, despite the flames in front of her and Sherlock's hand still keeping her at bay.

"Feisty one…" Rizzotti mused. "Well, better take care of that." He didn't take a second glance at the pair as he lazily waved his hand to his minion. Maciullato instantly began walking down the steps. Fear flashed across Sherlock mind as he yanked back his doctor and stepped in front of her. Jo-Ann stumbled and grabbed the back of his coat for balance.

"Sherlock what are you doing?! I'm supposed to protect you remember?!" she objected as the detective watch Maciullato descend towards them.

"You did that already!" Sherlock shouted in a quick and strong voice. Jo-Ann stared at his head from behind, not able to see his expression. "…You did that already." He repeated quieter and refused to look at her. If only he had.

Before Jo-Ann could utter word, two sets of arms came at her from behind. Two of the teenage boys had entered the ring by laying a singed cloth on the fire. Sherlock whipped around to see his doctor being taken away. He turned to fight back when Maciullato held him back. Jo-Ann fought her captors with ferocity, regrettably letting go of her detective's hand. "No!" Sherlock shouted when one of the boys held a cloth to his doctor's mouth. Jo-Ann held her breath and got a wrist free. Without hesitation, she wrapped her arm around one of the boy's heads and trapped him in a head lock. The other boy successfully held the chloroform soaked cloth to her nose and mouth as she fought off both boys and Sherlock squirmed in Maciullato's grip. Slowly losing her consciousness, Jo-Ann was dragged out of the ring over the cloth that covered the fire. After she was clear, another boy snatched the cloth away and lit fire where it needed replaced in shocking speed.
