Chapter 1

Lila Fowler let out a long, liquid scream of pure terror.

Three yards away stood the most horrifying creature she had ever seen. A wolf. A silver wolf with eyes like transparent glass.

Her eyes were drawn to his gleaming white fangs. Everything else seemed blurred and unreal. The surrounding trees. The distant wreckage of the plane. The blue sky with its billowing clouds. None of it was real anymore.

The scene began to unfold in slow motion. Lila felt as if she and the wolf were suspended in oil. Hands, legs and feet moved sluggishly, one or two seconds out of sync with real time.

The muscles in the wolf's shoulders and hips bunched as he gathered his legs beneath him tl spring from his perch on the rocky ledge.

She had screamed moments ago, but the sound was only now begginning to reverbrate through the woods. It seemed to echo back forever. There was rustle and stir in the treetops, and suddenly a dark cloud of birds rose ul and flew away, wings furiously beating againts the sky.

I'm going to die, Lila thought. She stood still as the wolf lunged. Please let it be quick, she thought in desperation. I dont want to suffer.

Fangs, claws and ninety pounds of predatory muscle hurtled toward her and then. . . astonishingly. . . veered away seconds before his jaws made contact with her flesh.

What's happening? What's going on? She wondered.

The wolf fell back a few steps and snarled, pacing nervously back and forth.

Then Lila understood. The wolf didn't know what creature she was. He has no idea what to expect from her. Flight? Claws? Brute strength?

The wolf whined in confusion, then lifted his lips again in a snarl. "Come on. Come on," the wolf seemed to be saying. "Show me what you are."

Lila was determined tk show no fear. "I'm not taking any crap off some overgrown yard dog," she muttered. She took an experimental step forward, and the growling become more intense.
