This is the time when the wolf sprang,he sprang for real, leaving the ground in two stages. First came the heavily muscled shoulders and the terrifying head. Then came the powerful flanks and hind paws.
Lila lifted her branch. Please let me have enough strength,she prayed. Please.
A savage cry tore through the still air as the wolf sailed toward her, his jaws aimed right at her throat.
Wait until you see the whites of his eyes, she warned herself. Wait for the night moment. You can't afford to miss. With every ounce of strength and courage she possed, Lila forced herself to wait . . . wait . . . wait . . .
The wolf was so close she could feel his hot breath.

She swung with all her might. The branch connected with the wolf's skull and snapped into two pieces. The impact was so forceful that Lila shrieked as red hot pained traveled up her arm and set fire to her shoulder.
The wolf let out a surprised yip and fell to the ground. He lay there for a moment, stunned.
Lila's legs began to shake, and the piercing ache in her arm was causing big black dots to form in front of her eyes. She dropped the stick and ran almost blindly back toward the cockpit. There wasn't much time. The wolf was going to be on his feet in a matter of seconds.
