To son from father
Be happy when happy
Be sad when you’re sad
Don’t smother your feelings
The emotions you have.
Smile when you want to
And remember to laugh
Bring happiness to others
Create your own path
But cry when it’s too hard
Too much to bear
Let out your thoughts
I’ll lend you an ear.
I apologise for leaving
So early in life
But I’ll always remember
That year you turned five.
I gave you a warship
Said: ‘it’s daddy’s car’
You glanced at me strangely
Then started to laugh.
A bittersweet feeling
Had filled me right up
How could I tell you
That it was my truck?
That starting next month
It was what I would drive
Into the battlefield
To fight to survive.
But before I could blink
Time had flew by
I kissed your forehead
And told you a lie.
‘See you next year son’
I remembered to smile
Your mother was crying
Knowing it was a while.
Yet on the 23rd day
A bullet pierced through my chest
You and your mother
Had flashed through my head.
I uttered your names
With my very last breath
Reliving each memory
Before I was dead.
Now I know what I’ve promised
Everything I have said
I swore to protect you
Even on my death bed.
And that’s a promise I’ll keep
I swear on my soul
Because wherever you’ll be
Is wherever I’ll go.
Did you like it? It is sad, but very meaningful!
