Post Winter Soldier AU
You woke up to the smell of bacon and pancakes coming from the kitchen in your small apartment. "What the hell..." you groaned, wondering who could have gotten into your apartment without waking you up. As you made your way to the kitchen/living room, your leading candidates were your best friend Natasha and your Uncle Clint. However, when you rubbed your eyes and looked directly at the person cooking, you nearly freaked out. It was your husband, Bucky. "Goddammit Buck!" you yelled. "Good morning to you too doll." he said with a smile plastered on his face. "Sorry, but I was kind of Expecting someone else." you said, scratching the back of your neck and adjusting your bathrobe. You didn't care that you looked like a mess in front of Bucky, as he always told you that you looked adorable like that. "What are you doing here? I thought you were supposed to be in Barcelona taking out some other Hydra division." you said, taking a seat at your kitchen table. Bucky brought a cup of coffee over for you. "Didn't take as long as we thought it would. I wanted to surprise you." He said as you took the mug from his hands.
"Well I was definatly surprised." you added, making his smile grow wider. "How many pancakes do you want?" he asked, walking back over to the stove where a stack of golden pancakes was waiting to be lathered in syrup and butter. "Give me three." you said, taking a sip of coffee. Sunlight was streaming through the window in the living room, and you couldn't think of a more perfect day. Bucky set down a plate in front of you and took a seat directly across from you. You took three bites before talking again. "Alright Barnes, spill it. Normally when we do nice things it's before something bad happens." you questioned, remembering what happened after he proposed to you, and after he took you to a concert, and after he had a huge party for you just because. You had figured out by then that Bucky liked to soften the blow so you wouldn't feel as terrible. It was sweet, but also nerve racking. "Why can't I just make my wife breakfast?" he asked. "Bucky, you can tell me anything." you replied, reaching across the table and taking his hand. He let out a sigh.
"(Y/N), I have to go back to Siberia." you let out a small gasp, but quickly regained a calm facade. "I know, I don't like it either, but say the word and I won't go. I'll tell Steve some excuse and he'll believe me." he continued. You didn't know what to say except "Why Siberia?" Bucky took a deep breath and grabbed something from his pocket. A flash drive. "Hydra's setting up their Siberian division again, mainly because they found weapons designs that could wipen out half a country if they wanted it to. We need to get this flash drive which contains a virus that will stop them from finding the location." You took in each word, trying not to break down. He was leaving again, and going back to the very place he dreaded. "But if you don't want me to go, I won't." he finished, getting up from the table and begining to clean up. "Bucky, it's your job. I'm not going to tell you to not help people just for me." you said firmly. "So you're saying I should go?" he asked. "No, I'm saying that you should consider your options. I can't choose for you Bucky, you know I'd never do that to you."
The two of you were silent. Not a word was spoken until later that day when you got home from grocery shopping. Bucky was waiting for you to open the door so he could tell you his descision. You opened the apartment door, and he didn't even give you chance to set the groceries down. "(Y/N), I'm gonna stay." He said. You nearly collapsed. "What?" you asked, making sure you heard him correctly. "I'm going to stay. (Y/N), I love you more than anything, and it hurts me every time I leave you knowing that I could never come home. So I'm done. I've already told Steve and he agrees with me as well." your jaw dropped. "Bucky! You can't quit your job because of me! And believe me, it makes me worried sick every single time you leave, but what about money? We can't just live in this apartment and not pay for it." you added, trying to talk some sense into him. You couldn't help but feel guilty about all of this. He was quitting because of you after all.
"(Y/N), I have it all worked out. Stark offered you a job at the Tower." Bucky tried to reassure you, and it worked. You had no argument left. You dropped the groceries and ran over to your husband, wrapping him in a big hug. He planted a kiss on your cheek and smiled.

"Mommy! Can you tell me a bed time story?" You turned around and stood in the doorway of your daughter's bedroom. "Emberlyn, it's bed time." you said, trying to find an excuse for you to get some sleep. "Please mama? I promise I won't ask for dessert tomorrow!" she pleaded. You couldn't help but smile at how adorable your daughter was. "But you have to promise to go right to bed, Em." you said sternly, taking a seat on the edge of her bed. "I promise mama." Emberlyn said, crossing her heart. "Alright, what story to you want to hear?" you asked, turning to face your daughter. "The Winter Soldier and Agent 38." she declared. It had become a habbit of yours, telling stories about you and Bucky and all your adventure before you retired. One day, you would have to tell Emberlyn the truth, but for now, you let her eight year old mind believe they were stories.
"Once upon a time, there was a man who couldn't remember anything. All he knew was that he was a spy and he worked for an underground organization. But one day, while he was trying to finish a mission on a bridge, he met a beautiful girl. She had the most amazing (y/e/c/) eyes and was frightened by the sight of him. She was known as Agent 38, and she hadn't come alone. A blonde haired man came with her, and when he saw both of them, he remembered his life. He broke away from his life as a spy and fell in love with Agent 38. The two dated for about two years, before one day at the same bridge, he asked her to marry him. However, he had to leave the next day for his job. When he came home, they got married and had a beautiful ceremony in a place called Wakanda, in South Africa. The blonde man was there, as well as a few of their close friends. Agent 38 and the Winter Soldier settle down in a small apartment, but he was still working. One day, he told Agent 38 he was done with work, and they had a beautiful daughter. They all loved Happily ever after. The end."
You were shocked to see that Emberlyn was already asleep. "Goodnight, Em." you brushed a strand of her brown hair from her face. She looked so much like Bucky. You exited her room and saw your husband standing right outside your bedroom door. "Cute story." he said. "We have to tell her eventually." you whispered, trying not to wake her up.
"We will, eventually."
