The next day in my math class I was surprised to find out the Damien was in my class. Apparently he was a new student as of yesterday. I was even more surprised when he sat next to me, as was everyone else.

            “We meet again.” He said.

I rolled my eyes he was so obviously flirting with me.

“It would appear so,” I replied.

He was quiet for a moment and I continued doodling. This was so strange. Damien seemed to be interested in me. Why would he be interested in me? I had no idea what I looked like so I didn’t know if I was pretty or not. I must have been if he was flirting with me.

“So, Rowan, would you want to eat lunch with me?”

I let out a sigh before answering. “Sorry, I already have plans.” There was no way I was going to bail on Max for some guy I didn’t know.

Over the next week or so Damien continued to flirt with me. And I let him. I may have even flirted back at times. I still hadn’t told Max about him. If I did Max would go into over protective mode and I didn’t want that.

Then on Tuesday Damien asked me out on a date. Shockingly I said yes. I wasn’t used to this kind of attention, but I kind of liked it. And well I liked Damien. Now all I had to do was tell Max. Yeah, that wasn’t going to be fun.

I decided to tell him when he was driving me home. This was one of the few times I was glad to be blind, because I wouldn't be able to see his face. I knew he would be angry I just didn’t know how angry.

            “Max?” I asked slightly timidly.

            “Yeah?”

“I uh have something to tell you,” I started. When he said nothing I continued, “So last week when I had that rough day and went to the bathroom I ran into this guy, Damien. And he’s in my math class. We started talking. And he uh asked me out on a date.” Silence. “Max?”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Max asked. He was mad. When Max was mad he didn’t yell, but he would get very serious and talk with a very level voice.

“Because I didn’t think I would see him again.”

Max was silent. I hated when Max was silent because I couldn’t see his face. I waited patiently for him to speak. I knew it might be a few minutes because he was focusing on driving. Or at least trying to. I felt the car stop he had either parked on the side of the road or we had reached my house.

“He’s going to hurt you,” Max said.

            I turned to face him.

            “Excuse me?”

“He. Is. Going. To. Hurt. You.”

My mouth dropped. “How do you know?” Damien had actually talked to me and treated me like a normal person. “You don’t know him!” I wasn’t necessarily defending him I was trying to defend my own judgment.

“Neither do you!” Max raised his voice slightly. “You’ve known him for like a week and you talk to him like an hour a day.” Max never raised his voice at me before. I felt myself shrink back in my seat slightly. He was always so even tempered. “Just because he is actually talking to you doesn’t mean…”
