Jack glanced down at his forearm. The first words his soulmate would ever say to him were written there. These words had plagued his thoughts every waking moment for the past seventeen years. He subconsciously clawed at the words. He had tried to erase those words so many times before. School had been hell. Kids constantly tortured him. Home hadn't been great either. His father was always insisting finding his soulmate wasn't important and that he would be better off just settling . Jack had been ridiculed for as long as he could remember. He was excluded from a lot of things, and all because of four simple words.
'But I'm not gay.'
When he first understood what those words meant, he was heartbroken. His soulmate was going to reject his affections. His mother tried to reassure him, but nothing worked. Jack stopped looking for his soulmate.
At school, the other kids were ruthless. They called him awful names. taunted him. When he was twelve, he tried to cut the words off his arm. His sister found him on the bathroom floor, blood covered the not so white tile. He can still hear her screams. After an agonizing hospital trip, his mother wouldn't let him near anything that he could possibly use to hurt himself. His siblings were always by his side, watching over him.
Of course his father tried to convince him to not let the words get to him, that it was better off if he would give up on his soulmate. He would tell Jack that there was a nice girl out there that was willing to over look the words on his arm. Jack just nodded and wanted to believe that going along with what his father said was best.
The taunts at school got worse as he got older. Boys would corner Jack in the locker room and gloat about how they already found thier soulmates .Then it turned physical as the others began to worry about finding their soulmates. He'd come home with bruises almost every day. No girl would even talk to him even the few who liked him saw him as a lost cause all because of those stupid words. No boys would talk to him either. Random kids would come up to him and repeat those words to him. The first time it happened Jack almost fell for it. A handsome boy walked right up to him and said the words written on his arm. Jack responded by stuttering out a confused 'what?'. Jack felt a twinge of hope in him for the first time in forever. Then the boy laughed. Several other students joined him. Jack stared down at his arm which held the words 'yeah. Sure. Whatever.' Which wasn't what Jack had said.
"You'll never find your soulmate. And if you do, he's not gonna want you." The boy spat.
Ever since then, Jack never believed anyone He figured if he didn't talk, he'd never find his soulmate and that would be better than getting his hopes up. He'd never have to face that rejection. He didn't want anyone to see what was written on his arm.
