Akari's POV:
It seems like forever ago, we were in an ambush, but now we're finally in Phoenix Drop. It's a normal-looking village, nothing really special. All the houses are made of boring wood, the road is drab gravel, and the scenery is made up entirely of regular trees. Nothing extraordinary.
What are you doing? Admiring the scenery? You should be worried about Luna right now!
My eyes jolt to Luna, lying unconscious on the back of Laurence's fast-moving horse. The arrow is still lodged in her stomach, and blood is still pouring out. Her wavy black hair is hanging off the side of the horse.
I've always questioned why she's kept her hair as long as it is, it's all the way down to her ankles when she stands up. It just seems unreasonable to keep it that long while on the run. She refuses to cut it no matter what I say, and says that her hair is "its own person and can grow as long as it likes."
When we turn another corner, Laurence immediately jumps off his horse and runs up to a house. He raps on the door several times before a tired-looking redhead woman comes out in pink sleeping robes.
"Laurence, it's one in the morning, what are you-" She trails off as her eyes wander over to Luna and Garroth. She snaps awake and rushes over to the horse. "Well don't just stand there. Help me bring them inside, you idiots!"
Aphmau and I skip off the horse in no time and help Laurence and the redhead with our unconscious friends. Laurence and Aphmau take Garroth, while the redhead and I help Luna.
The inside of this woman's house is plain, nothing special. Bookcases, a few chairs, a table. All normal things to have in a house.
I wish Luna and I could have a house of our own like this, just more decorative and cozy.
The redhead leads us to a guest room with two twin beds, we place Garroth on one and Luna on the other. Luna's crimson blood resembles her lips.
She's always reminded me of a fairytale character that my mother used to read to me about. They're called Snow White. With snow-white skin, blood-red lips, and hair as black as the night, she perfectly resembles the princess. So that's the story that Luna used to repeat to herself every night before going to sleep, to calm both of us down.
Luna says that I resemble a fairytale character too, someone called Cinderella. We both have put-up hair, blue eyes like the ocean, and perfectly tanned skin. That's the story that I would say after she says hers.
Though, both of us have something different about us that separates us from the characters. Luna has two different colored eyes, her left one the color of flaming ember and her right one being the color of pure blue ice. I have a large birthmark on my neck that goes from lower on the left side, and goes to the top of the brim of the front in its large, blob-like shape. These things are said to make us "imperfect."
"Okay, I need everyone here to get out," The redhead's voice interrupts my thoughts, "and I need one of you to get Zoey here as fast as you can. Her magic will be able to help."
"I'll get her!" Laurence exclaims before rushing out the door, shoving Aphmau and I along as well.
I quickly close my eyes and scan the redhead's brain before leaving. Kiki. What a nice, simple name.
**************
Aphmau leads me to an empty house, all the way on the other side of the village.
How dare she not take me to a house much closer to where Luna is staying! Doesn't she understand that I'm worrying?
"This is the guest house, sorry for it not being very close to where Aurelia is staying." She explains, gesturing to the small wooden building.
"I want to see her! Why can't I see her?!" I scream in her face with worry. I cannot control myself. This is my best friend we're talking about!
In shock, Aphmau steps back. She seems terrified, like I'm about to kill her or something.
"C-Calm down. I promise, she'll be okay! Zoey and Kiki are very good at medical stuff." Aphmau replies, reaching her hand out and placing it on my shoulder.
"Fine" I say, and shake off her hand. I open the door to the guest house, and see a cute white and pink kitchen next to the stairs. I make my way to the next floor, and there is a single bed with a bedside table sitting next to it. Cute house. Cozy.
What am I doing here? I could've just picked up Luna, and ran away. I could heal her. Maybe. If only mom still had those peach pills. I miss my mom. I miss my father. I miss my half-brother. I don't miss my step-father. I wish I never even knew my step father. I wish he never even existed.
My step-father forced my mother into marriage. My father couldn't do anything about it. Maybe one day, I can fix my family. Fix everything. Restart my whole life. But, as of now, I cannot do anything.
