I awake at first light. The sky is still bright pink and orange. I don't get to see the beauty in the world often, let alone enjoy it. Most of my days are bad, but there's a little bit of good in every bad day. I sit in silence for a while, and watch the sunrise, but I k ow I can't stay long. I have to keep moving. When they killed everything I had ever know, I found a note, attached to the knife in my mother's chest. It read :
"You can run, but you can't hide forever, witch!"
I never knew why they called me a witch. I was only 8. I packed my bags and left my empty home in Arizona before the cops showed up. They would have put me in a girls' home, and that's not going to happen. Never was My biggest fear since it happened, has been either to be caught by the police and thrown in a home, or being killed by my family's murderer. Most of my dreams are of the later. As the last of the pink fades away I get moving. Can never stop moving. Even if I look like crap, I still brush my hair and put it up in a bun everyday when I get tired. I was big on my looks when I ran. I guess it's just my way of saying "never loose yourself". My long brown hair flows halfway down my thighs. I once cut through Colorado to Nebraska, but it was too cold, so I went Southwest. I'm heading to Tennessee. I've gotten good at singing while I walk. Songs of hope, songs of peace, songs that promise a better future and a better life. I hear a car and superman dive into the ditch. I'm just always so paranoid. I pick myself up out of the ditch and keep on walking. I hear screaming and yelling up ahead. A girl's crying. I hear gun shots and screams. I instinctively duck. A girl about 15 with a backpack slowly backs out of a house up ahead, and a man with a gun follows her. NO! I can't let this happen. When I was about 9 I started saving up for a gun. I finally bought one illegally last month. I didn't think I'd have to use it this early. Good thing the guy gave me 1,000 rounds free. I'd been practicing at night. I pull it out of my holster and hide in the trees. I get a good shot and fire over the girl's head and between the man's eyes. The man falls dead and I curiously watch as she falls to the ground crying. I run across the street and grab her gently by the arm."We have to go. The cops will be here soon and you look like you're running away. They'll throw us both in either jail or girls' homes, and I don't have a permit for this, forget it being registered."
The girl rises to her feet and starts running with me, tears still streaming down her face. I put the gun back in the concealed holster and run faster. We finally find another patch of woods. We stop and rest there for a while.
"We need disguises in case the neighbors were watching."
I pull out a knife and take my hair out of the bun. Still in the pony tail holder, I cut off my hair. About 4 feet of hair falls to the floor. I pick it up and put it in my bag for locks of love. She gets the memo. I hand her the hair bow and she puts her hair up. I chop hers like I did mine and collect that hair too. She doesn't ask questions. I like that.
"Look, I know what it's like. I've been there. I am there. The difference is, I've been at it a lot longer than you, and I probably would have a house and an education by now if I had a friend. It's not my job to get you those things. It's my job to keep us alive. Keep in mind that I haven't had a friend in almost 10 years, so bear with me and do as your told. Now what is your name?"
The girl looks at me questioningly."Fine. Your new name is Sarah. First name in my head, now let's get moving. Did you bring any money? We need hair dye."
She shakes her head no.
"Then let's steer clear of the city."
We keep walking until sunset, stopping periodically because the newbie can't keep up.
"There's a storm shelter up ahead. We had better stop for the night and bunker down. Did you bring a phone? Shine your light down there."
