Just to say, many of these characters belong to Eoin Colfer. Thanks. Hope you enjoy.
Artemis Fowl sat on this somewhat rickety chair, looking out onto the streets. Beside him sat the burly Butler, his hand hovering above the right hand side of his belt. Artemis brushed some imaginary dust from his jacket and looked disapprovingly at the rather pathetic offering of tea.
"Remind me to never come to this town again," he said to Butler off handedly.
Butler said nothing to Artemis, looking around carefully, eyeing up the locals. Artemis sat and watched impatiently, knowing that it was only a matter of time until they came.
The they in question, turned up soon enough.
A teenage girl walked along the street in the town center, her eyes locking onto Artemis's cold ones for just a second too long, then she continued to walk on, her long hair swaying as she walked away. Butler raised a small camera and took face shots of this girl, then lowered the minute thing. Artemis watched her as she walked towards a tree, looked up into its branches and made a strange noise to a squirrel sitting on the branch. It stopped and looked down at her suspiciously, then ran higher into the tree. The girl walked on, then turned quickly and stared at Artemis, who was staring right back. The girl grinned and winked at him, then put her thumb to her temple, thumb facing downwards, then pointed to him. She was telling him she knew who he was. Artemis felt a wave of something cold go through his stomach, but he quashed the feeling. She turned gracefully and wandered onwards, leaving Artemis glaring after her.
"This is the sixth time she's shown up at the same place we are," said Artemis quietly, "all in different places around the country."
"The first time the same person shows up twice, it's coincidence," said Butler carefully, "the third time it's unlikely. Then when it comes to the sixth time? This is hardly a coincidence, Artemis."
"Yes, so I suspect."
Artemis was at his desk in his study, glaring angrily at the monitor. A picture that Butler had taken of the girl filled the screen, her bright blue intelligent eyes with a thin ring of gold around her iris staring back at him fixedly. Who was she? Artemis brought up his E-mail and typed a message up to his good friend, Holly Short. He attached several images of the girl and hit 'send'. He sat back, glaring at the screen, awaiting the reply.
Bellow the surface Holly was subduing a fugative. The goblin had cuffs on and was licking its eye balls irritably. A little light flashed on the inside of her visor that showed Artemis had E-mailed her and she allowed herself a small smile.
"Enjoy pain, elf?" hissed the goblin.
"Only yours," she growled back.
She hefted him up and dragged him along the floor, over to a prison vehicle with a driver waiting in the front, awaiting orders. He was new to the job and looked nervous as she approached the drivers side door.
"Take him on to the compound," she said to the driver, "I will follow on foot."
They nodded quickly and drove off, leaving Holly to walk along the road back towards her apartment. She opened the message and looked at the E-mail Artemis had sent.
Holly-
Have you even seen this girl before? If not, ask Foaly to check his records.
-Artemis
Holly flicked up the photos of the girl and looked at them, confused. Why was Artemis worried about this normal looking girl? She shook her head, he was one strange Mud-Man. She forwarded the E-mail to Foaly and went back home, letting out a sigh, knowing that this was probably the beginnings of more trouble with Artemis, but if she was totally honest, she didn't mind one bit. In fact, she was really looking forward to whatever this was going to turn into.
Foaly spun in his specially designed chair, tapping his hooves to a song that vibrated from the speakers around him, singing along loudly. A message icon flashed on his screen so he opened the message, reading it through quickly. He opened the attachments and let out a low whistle as this girls face filled the screen, her blue eyes looking at him. He let out a small whiny and shuddered.
"Scarry eyes," he muttered to himself.
With a few hand strokes of the keyboards his records began running the face images through the systems. He came up with no results.
"Oh come on, sweetie," he murmured, stroking the keyboard affectionately, "try again."
With a few more taps on the board, it ran another search, this time coming up with a name from a news paper article and a school record. He read through the short article and flicked through the report, his brow furrowing. Then he E-mailed both Holly and Artemis with his results, sitting back in the chair and looking at the girls face in wonderment.
Artemis felt a pang of excitement when he saw that Foaly had E-mailed him. He loaded up the article and report and looked through them both. He read the report first. Average GCSE's, a good report. An artist, it appeared, having got an A in art. The teachers had put that she seemed to day dream a lot, wrote too many stories and lived in a world of her own. He sighed, this was getting him no-where except knowing what she was like at school, her name and her date of birth. Alright, so she was born 1994 on the 6th of July and her name was Faylinn Hayze. Faylinn meant 'Fairy Kingdom' and Hayze sounded some what magical... He pulled up the article Foaly had found for him and read it through.
It was reported that today, 16 year old Faylinn Hayze, has been kidnapped. There were signs of forced entry into her home where she and her mother lived, her father having died the year before. Her mother, Ms. Fee Hayze, has been taken to the hospital to be treated for shock. The search is on-going and the police are looking for any eye witnesses.
Artemis frowned, the lines in his young face creasing even deeper. This girl has been missing for a year, so where had she been? She was now seventeen and appearing around the country. Who was this girl and why was she doing this? She knew him, somehow, even though he was an extraordinarily solitary person. He shook his head in disbelief and wandered up to his bedroom, going to bed quickly, the day seemed to have taken it right out of him.
When Artemis awoke in the morning he rose and stretched. He went to the cupboard where there were five almost identical tailored suites lined up in a row. He selected one that looked no different from the rest and got into it. He then went down the grand stair way into his study where he found a bunch of letters on his desk. Butler must have picked them up and placed them there as he did every morning and x-rayed them to check them. There were loads of bank statements and other letters from his various investments but one envelope caught his eye. It was a bright blue and written on in gold lettering. He got his letter opener and slid it across the back bone of the letter. He pulled a piece of paper from it, it was thick beneath his fingers and he could feel the quality was 140gsm. He looked down at the paper and saw a carefully detailed sketched drawing of his face. there was only one thing that had colour and that was his eyes, cold and blue as always. Beneath it was a small written notation.
Artemis Fowl, are you really just a dream? Please help me, I think I'm stuck here.
It had an elaborate styled F and H at the end of it, so he knew it was from the girl, Faylinn Hayze. He carefully laid down the piece of paper and went to the door of his study to see Butler coming along with the tray of continental breakfast that he was always brought in the mornings.
"Butler?" said Artemis, "I think we have a problem."
Tell me what you think!
