So, I am in the shame. THE SHAME! For leaving this for so long.
The usual excuse of Uni work being difficult. Plus, I kind of didn't want to finish this story in case it was a let down X3
So here it is, finally, the concluding part of Artemis Fowl and the Master Experimentation.
I hope it live up to your expectations~
"I don't understand," said Holly, the blaster bumping against her thigh.
"Don't worry, Captain, all will become apparent in due course," Vinyáya said, trying to comfort Holly, then turned to the black clad operatives. "All right, boys, take him to the dining room."
"No!" screamed Faylin, kneeling beside Artemis, "I'm the Queen! You have to obey me! Leave Artemis alone!"
As one the squad looked to Vinyáya, who set her face as indifferent.
"I'm sorry, your Majesty, but we are above your control. You are not Queen yet. Captain?"
"Yes, Commander?" responded Holly on automatic.
"Please will you escort the princess to her room. Vince and Quay will guard the door. She is not to leave that room until the procedure is carried out."
Holly opened her mouth as if to argue, but thought better of it. If Faylin was out of the way she'd have more chance of finding out what had happened. She walked brusquely over to Faylin and put a hand on her shoulder. Faylin shrugged her off.
"It'll be alright," whispered Holly, "I'll make sure he's safe, I promise."
Faylin looked up with damp eyes, clasping Artemis's limp hand.
"Please, Faylin," she whispered.
Faylin nodded and dropped Artimis's hand, rising to her feet. She looked down at Artemis for a moment, then allowed Holly to tow her away by the arm, followed by two black clad guards.
Holly entered the dining room to find that they had managed to get Artemis on the table. As she approached, she saw a circlet about his head with wires leading away from it. Her stomach jolted and anger filled her.
"What's going on?" she demanded.
Vinyáya turned to look at her, a sadness in her eyes.
"It has to be done, Holly,"
"You can't wipe his mind! Not again!"
Vinyáya sighed and shook her head wearily.
"Holly, he can't know that he has magic. He can't know what the Master did to him. The Higher Council have declared him a threat. It was wipe his memories of this venture or kill him."
"Higher Council? I didn't know there was one."
"It's not knowledge that we like to share."
"And did they order Artemis to be experimented on? Or Faylin?" demanded Holly.
"No, the Lower Council acted quite without authority. It would appear that none of them proposed it, though. No records were made of their meetings about it and though there is speculation as to who it was, it cannot be proven."
"So they get off without any charges," said Holly, anger bubbling under the surface.
"For now," responded Vinyáya, with a small smile.
There was a few minutes silence while Holly digested the information.
"How much are you going to wipe?" she asked quietly.
"well, we've identified the one main trigger of the whole event, so we'll wipe everything from the point it shows up to the present day."
"What's the trigger?"
"The princess."
Holly's eyes went wide and she choked on her sharp intake of breath.
"You can't," she croaked, "he loves her!"
Vinyáya shook her head.
"Human affection is meaningless in this situation. Don't you understand, Holly? It's wipe him or kill him!"
"But Faylin-"
"Will just have to be grateful that he's not dead."
"How will you hide her existence? He's a genius, he can hack anything, surely he'll find out about her sometime."
"There are ways. Now Captain, if you continue to stall the proceedings I shall have to have you removed from the room and sedated."
Holly's brain lined up the phrase 'I'd like to see you try', but her lips were smart enough to stay closed. She nodded once, the anger in her stomach like acid.
"Shall we get on with it, then?" Vinyáya said brusquely.
Holly watched as one of the black clad squad set up a monitor, plugging various wires into it. In moments gnomish was scrawling its way across the screen, Artemis's memories playing out across it like code. Holly watched with tears in her eyes as a large section was selected. Unable to watch any longer, she left the room, leaning on the door jamb.
Foally saw her and clopped over from where he'd been pacing the corridor. He put a hand on her shoulder.
"It's for the best," said Foally quietly.
"I'll let you try and explain that to Faylin, then," she said bitterly.
"I'm sure Faylin will understand," he said, a hint of uncertainty in his voice.
Holly shook her head sadly.
"Where's Butler?" She asked after a moment, "Surely he wouldn't have allowed this!"
Foally looked at the floor.
"He invited them in. Vinyáya told him they were here as protection for Faylin. Butler had other things on his mind and I suppose his guard slipped. They then tried to explain what else they were here for and he went ballistic. They sedated him and explained to him why it had to be done, then laid him out in one of the living rooms. He's going to be furious when he comes around."
Holly stood dumbfounded. There was nothing she could do.
Artemis opened his eyes and stretched, yawning jaw cracking wide. He blinked a couple of times at the light that was streaming in from a crack in the curtains. He sat up and rubbed his eyes, then poured himself a glass of water from the jug beside the bed. He paused for a moment just before the glass touched his lips. There was a nagging feeling that he'd forgotten something. His forehead wrinkled for a moment in thought, then smoothed out again. Cool water passed across his tongue. It was probably just a dream that he couldn't quite remember.
I couldn't have been anything important.Years passed and the teenager Artemis Fowl grew into a man. He had many adventures and many near escapes. There was a time when he almost remembered, when Orion started to make himself known once again after so long pushed away under the blanket mind wipe. Holly and Foally were able to explain him away as Atlantis complex and Artemis was able to gain full control once again.
Eventually Artemis was bested by that part in him that was good and sacrificed himself knowingly and willingly. When he was almost taken, he somehow managed to stay behind, by sheer will power and giving his part fairy body to Orion, who was finally able to go on to the next life in a body that fitted him. Part human, part fairy.
Faylin grew into a Queen and she adjusted herself to be as such. She put Artemis out of her mind, put the ring into a box which got buried under the things in her new chambers. She'd found it difficult, at first, but now it was easy. In the beginning she spent a fair amount of time with Holly, but she found the times they spent together painful and when Holly went on the Demon hunt, Faylin was left on her own for a long time. In that time she healed, in a way, the scars still showed, but they became less visible over time.
She busied herself with being a good monarch.
When the time came and Artemis was reborn into the body Foally had made for him with some help from Doctor Roberts, Holly told him the story of their adventures. The more she told him, the more he remembered who he was.
Artemis went back to his family, to his life, but there was always a nagging sensation in the back of his mind. Something wasn't right. But he didn't know what.
One day Commander Holly Short came to visit as she was already top side, dealing with a smuggling case because she'd found that being behind a desk was terribly dull and could understand now why Root had always been so purple. As they sat together, drinking tea, Artemis decided it was time.
"Holly," he said quietly.
"Yes, Artemis?" she said, looking up with a faint smile.
"I- I get the feeling that there's something else. Something I don't remember."
Holly's smile faded and she shifted uneasily in her seat.
"Artemis... I can't tell you, I'm so sorry."
"Holly," he said sternly, "it's important, I know it is, I can feel it in me..."
For a moment she looked strained and then nodded.
"All right. I shouldn't do this. The amount of red tape on this is so dense you can't even see the shape of what it is beyond it. Come on, I'll take you down on the next shuttle."
The building was grand, Artemis had to admit. It was a beautiful building, fit for royalty and heavily enough guarded to be. But he knew that the fairies were on a diplomatic agenda, that having monarchs was a thing of the past, a relic that fairies didn't want to hold onto.
"What is this place?" he asked.
"It's the Palace."
"What? But fairies-"
A door at the end of the corridor opened and fairy that was shorter than usual, but that made up for his size in the volume and colours of the clothing he wore, stepped out.
"Her Majesty will see you now," he proclaimed.
"Let me go first," Holly said to him with a wide grin.
Holly stepped into the throne room and there, on the large, golden chair sat Faylin in all her finery. She smiled widely at Holly.
"Holly! It's been too long! I presume the promotion is treating you well?"
"Yes, thank you."
Artemis stepped in behind Holly, swiftly followed by the short fairy.
"Bow to the Queen!" he demanded.
Artemis did so quickly, confused and mildly annoyed. Then he looked up into the most beautiful face he had ever laid eyes on.
Suddenly everything was clear again.
"Faylin?" he whispered.
"Artemis?" she murmured back, her eyes huge.
Faylin stood and walked slowly towards him, not believing her own eyes. Artemis stood stock still. How could he ever have forgotten Faylin? How?
She reached out a quivering hand and touched his cheek. He took her into his arms and they embraced tightly, laughing together in joy.
It was discovered later that Artemis had retained his magic, which led to interesting debates and thesis. Artemis maintained his theory that it isn't the body that retains the magic, but the soul itself.
It was widely agreed that although Artemis had been born human, he was as much of a fairy as any of those under the earth, which meant that he would be allowed to marry Faylin.
But that is a different story.
