April

I entered the walls of a small souvenir store in a deserted field. On the inside of the store, clothes and drinks and jewelry took the majority of the place so for anyone this could be a simple and plain souvenir store.

But I knew better as, instead of looking around, I immediately went through a wooden door. I got to a black dark corridor and few light bulbs were the only source of light and decoration. Nevertheless, I didn't need a lot of light to keep going, I knew exactly where I was heading.

Chills crept up my skin as I got to an area with sealed grey doors. The fingerprint scanner standing in front of me only reminded me of what my punishment would be. Would I get suspended? Fired? Or even killed?

My index finger touched the surface of the scanner and after a few antagonizing seconds, the grey doors open with a loud screech revealing what I called, home.

Inside, dozens of workers are rushing with their missions.

Hackers figuring out passwords and emails and opening sealed doors with their authentic intelligence.

Agents fighting, practicing and preparing for big oncoming missions with their skilled bodies and strength.

For me, this was paradise. Everything was perfect. Well, everything would be perfect if I didn't have to constantly lie to my friend. My best friend, Charlie, who was clueless to all this. I didn't like thinking about that so I forgot all about Charlie while being here.

Slowly, I went up the stairs and headed to the Main Office where my parents and the Leader of LIT awaited for me. Just for me. I had never met Nicholas Whitaker, for he was a busy man.

As instructed, I took a seat next to my parents and waited for the scolding that was about to come from Mister Whitaker. My parents didn't help either, for their faces were ones of concern and disappointment. I knew a big fat scolding was coming at home too.

"April Beckett, I'm assuming you know why you were called." Nicholas said with a stern look full of concern as I nod. Oh boy, I didn't like to be in trouble. "You could've been exposed and then you know what happens? You're relocated and off of LIT."

I sigh in relief that death was off the list. I don't know why I thought of that in the first place. No one gets killed here at LIT. It's against our vows.

Most of the punishments at LIT are not deathly ones like those at DIM, our rivals. They consists in three phases: First, they lower you a level. Here, agents go by levels so that the more skilled you are the more dangerous and better your mission is. So if you did something wrong, you would go on boring and safer missions.

If the first punishment doesn't work then you're suspended. No missions or visits to the organization. You were completely erased off the map in the company. The days you were off depend on what you did. Some people call this vacation, but for me it was something I never wanted to go through.

At last, If none of the others work, you get fired from your job. Fired! Relocated, with a different identity and off your work. For me that was in other words, Hell. This place was my sanctuary. A place where I could be myself.

"I know it was wrong, but I don't regret what I did. DIM agents were threatening my fellow classmates," I say defending myself, "Even if it was a trick to figure out who I was, it's my job to keep the people safe and that's what I was trying to do. So if you're going to punish me because of it, then so be it."

It's wrong, I know, but I need to tell them the truth. Even if I get punished the only thing they'll do is lower me a level. I was in level 5, the highest level. For my age that's history, and I don't think level 4 is that bad. Perhaps it's safer which is a good thing.
