A woman in a tight black dress applied the last bit of powder onto Mackenzie Ziegler's face before pushing her into a group of other toddlers waiting to go onstage.
The little girls were nervous as for most of them it was their first pageant. They were all dressed up in rainbow colours, rehearsing their 'special' talent. Ziegler was only four and had already been dolled up, from butterfly hair clips to ruby red shoes Dorothy would be envious of.
Another woman in a similar dress pointed the girl at the front of the line to a place where she was meant to stand. Before anyone knew it the little girls had all entered the stage.
This was the start of fake eyelashes, elaborate hairstyles, and sparkly tiaras. Endless rounds of interviews, talent and evening wear. Mothers living through their daughters, friends, and foes and a male soon to be in the audience for his sister but falling in love with the girl that he had watched grow up but didn't know he existed.
