no. 14 - full of surprises

✿✿✿

It was nearing four pm when the doorbell rang through the Ziegler house, surprising Mackenzie. There was still no one in her house so the responsibility of answering was down to her, even though she had woke up so hungover she felt she was going to die in five minutes and looked it too.

"Hello," Mackenzie groggily rubbed her eyes like she had done all afternoon, then she saw who it was. "Oh, hey Johnny."

"Hey," he stood there with a goofy grin on his face even with his burst lip that hurt like hell, she spotted it almost instantly.

"God, Johnny what happened?" She moved forward to brush his lip with her thumb, making him wince slightly in pain.

"Nothing, do you want this?" Johnny held up the memory card making Mackenzie's face instantly light up.

"Oh, I looked for that all over this morning," she grabbed it from him until she realized the deal she made. "Well considering I'm not meant to be talking to you, I'm going to shut the door." She made a quick wave before Johnny stopped her.

"You don't need to worry about her anymore," he stopped the door from shutting once again surprising Mackenzie.

"I do. I need to keep my promise," her voice raised.

"You don't anymore. I took care of it," he rubbed the back of his neck as Mackenzie made the connection in her head of Johnny's burst lip and the broken deal.

"Oh, do you want to come in or-"

He took the offer, once again stepping into her house and going into her front room. It was filled with pictures of Mackenzie and her sister through the years. Picking up one of the photos he smiled seeing a small Kenzie in her first pageant, winning.

"Please don't look at them," she giggled and put the picture down facing the table down.

"I've seen it before."

"How? Did you go through the stuff in my house last night?" She took a step back, misjudging him for a second.

"No, my sisters in the background of that photo. I was always dragged along," Mackenzie then stepped forward again to where she has stood before, close to him.

"But I've done so many pageants with Lauren, god you've seen me grow up. That's more than slightly embarrassing," she referred back to her days of being nine when she would go on the stage parading bows in her hair.

"I saw that but I also saw all of your talent rounds as a child," Mackenzie's eyes widened. When she watched videos her mother took of them she cringed. "Can you still do all of those flips you did?"

Johnny chuckled as Mackenzie put the picture back up the right way, back on display.

"I have absolutely no idea but it's fun to find out," she grabbed his arm and pulled him out to the hall where there was the largest area.

"Don't tell me you're actually going to try. It's been like ten years Kenz!"

"I know," she winked and began to flip down her hall. However, she couldn't keep it up and her feet slipped letting her body crash to the floor.

Johnny quickly found his way to aid Mackenzie who was rubbing the ankle she fell on.

"Are you okay? Do you need some ice?" He began examining her ankle but was pushed away.

"I'm fine," Mackenzie got up and brushed herself down. She wasn't looking Johnny in the eye as she was embarrassed. She really wanted to make the move.

"Are you sure?" He got up as well and took Mackenzie's hand. She nodded, bringing them closer.

The day had already been full of surprises for Mackenzie so she decided to give him one.

"I would kiss you right now if my antics hadn't left you with a fucked up lip," although she pulled him even closer and grabbed his hand.

After all the times he had messed with Mackenzie's head, when he left her for Nadia and especially after their date, he thought that she would never want to see him again and she tried to convince herself that too but over time she found her connection to him was too strong. He loved her and unexpectedly, she still loved him.

"Kenz?" His voice raised slightly as her eyes met his, allowing herself to fall into his emerald eyes.

"Mckenzis?" He asked again making a small laugh escape her lips.

"Mhm," she mumbled into his chest that she had just fallen into.

"Let me take you out, properly this time. Not just in my car," Johnny put his hands through her hair and could feel her heart beat raise as he asked the question, giving him a warm feeling inside.

"Are you sure you want to go on a date with your mom?" Mackenzie pulled away from him. She was still slightly salty about the date even though she had accepted that she loved him anyways.

"Oh, I think I might go-" John misread what Mackenzie's joke, trying to take a few step to the door but two hands pulled on his arm moving his view back to Kenzie.

"I'm kidding Johnny, I would love to go on a date with you," both of them smiled, Mackenzie on her tip-toes to kiss his cheek.

She pulled him into a hug and he held her tightly, neither of them wanting to break away first but they were broken away by the front door opening and Mackenzie's sister entering.

"Maddie, I thought you weren't coming back till later," her cheeks filled with colour after being caught with Johnny.

"I'm gonna go, I'll text you later Kenz," Johnny kissed the top of her head before moving past Maddie who was smiling with raised eyebrows at her younger sister.

Once the door shut Maddie opened her mouth to say something about what she walked in on but was cut off by Mackenzie trying to change the topic, "Happy New year Mads!"

"No, you're not changing the subject! My baby sister has a boyfriend," Maddie practically squealed, running down the hall to her sister who still had blushing cheeks.

"He's not my boyfriend, I just kind of like him," her voice got quieter and quieter.

"You're telling me everything but after you have a shower, you smell like the floor of a brewery," Mackenzie hadn't showered since last night when she was getting ready and the smell of alcohol was still heavy making her wonder how Johnny was still attracted to her.

As Mackenzie made her way up the stairs, she heard her sister downstairs in her kitchen, "My sisters going to get married, have lots of kids, I'll be an aunt-" she carried on teasing Mackenzie till she knew she couldn't hear anymore.

Even though her sister was teasing her, the thought still made her smile.
