Aye, many people have asked for an eye tutorial. It was really hard for me, because not everyone draws eyes the same, and that's what makes it unique. Here is my attempt at showing you all.
Sooo yeah.
The top strip has different eyes that look a bit more realistic, but slightly cartoon-y I guess. The middle area shows what shapes/lines to draw to make an eye (which could vary between person!!!). And the bottom strip is some example of manga/anime eyes.
Like I said before, everybody draws eyes differently. So don't be afraid to make up your own eye look. Also, you don't have to copy any of my eye examples, because that is just how I draw it. If you draw differently from me, that doesn't mean your work is wrong or my work is wrong.
Realistic Eye Tips
- look at real people's eyes
- look at your own eyes
- focus on the overall shape
- make sure you draw a pupil
- shade the iris' outer edge dark and fade it into the pupil
- around the pupil is usually darker too
- make eyelashes going the right way, depending on what eye you're drawing
- contrast, contrast, contrast
- make sure to draw the eyelid crease
- add a highlight in the eye
- every eye is differentManga/Anime Eye Tips
- anything goes, really
- you have freedom
- look at examples of manga/anime eyes
- you cpuld choose a basic shape, and base the eye off of it (triangles, squares, ovals, stuff like that)
- add lots of sparkles/highlights, or add none, your choice
- the eyes can have stars, hearts, and other shapes inside of them
- contrast, contrast, contrast
- the outer iris is is usually darker than the inside, and fades darker as you get more close to the pupil
- some eyes don't have a pupil
- have fun by not sticking to the rulesEye Proportions
It's a basic rule that spacing between eyes is the size of one eye. That might sound confusing, but actually it's quite simple. On a human face, the space between your eyes is about the size of one eye. Basically you could fit another one of your eyes between your existing two. Make sense? Probably not, it's kinda hard to explain. I'll try though. Just imagine you have another eye, the exact same size as one of your own eyes, it would fit in between your natural eyes. Get it now? That's all I can think of right now. As usual, if you need anything specific about eyes, then let me know! Comment what tutorial you would like to see next!
