CHAPTER FOUR
Logan pushed Kelsey behind him with a hiss. Before she could blink the violinist was at Logan’s side.
“You are not welcome in my home, Hunter.” Logan growled from a crouching position.
Hunter lazily looked at his nails before pushing off the side of the bungalow. “Only your kind need an invitation, Logan.”
Your kind? What did that mean? Kelsey didn’t understand. “What does he mean? Why are your eyes red, Logan?”
Logan didn’t want Kelsey here if he was going to have to fight. Without looking at her he answered. “It’s just the light. Kelsey, I need you to go in the house, lock the door and wait for me to come for you.”
“I don’t understand.” She whispered.
“Just go.” Logan snapped. He needed to know she was safely behind a locked door – not that it could stop Hunter.
Kelsey ran into the bungalow. She was frightened but she didn’t know who she was more frightened of at the moment: Logan or the man from the beach.
When he heard the lock click into place Logan turned to Hunter. “I knew this day would come. I would ask that you not hurt the girl; she is innocent.”
Hunter looked at the man he hadn’t seen in four hundred years. “I would not hurt an innocent. You should know that, also, I’m not here for a fight. I wanted to tell you he’s here and looking for you. Keep your human close; I can smell you on her.” With that he vanished into the night.
The man beside Logan said, “If he is here he will go after Kelsey to bait you.”
Logan nodded, “I know, Colin.”
“I will talk to Samantha about placing protective wards around her house.” Colin said to the man he had known for almost two hundred years.
“Kelsey has dogs. Friendly dogs who run and play on the beach.” Logan answered.
“Tell Samantha how far they go so they will be protected as well.” Colin pulled out his phone. “I’ll call the clan to have her home watched tonight. No one will get near her.”
“Thank you, my friend.” Logan clasped Colin’s shoulder before he went into the house.
Logan found Kelsey huddled by his bed; tears streaked her face.
“Why were your eyes red?” Kelsey whispered. There was something about red eyes that nagged at her; it seemed she should know what it was.
“It was just a trick of the light.” He took her hands and pulled her to her feet.
“I am not stupid; I know what I saw.” She snapped at him as she pulled her hands away from his and folded her arms. “There is something about eyes turning red…I read it or something. Oh! I can’t think.” She started to shake. “Who was that man? What did he mean when he said your kind?”
“He is a man from my past. I am not sure why he’s here.” Logan told her truthfully.
“What did he mean when he said it only works for your kind? What works?” Kelsey asked.
