I rang the doorbell, tapping my right foot on the floor tiles in anxiousness. 'How would they react to see me?'
After a few seconds the door opened, it was Rahul. Rahul had opened the door with his bright cheeky smile, but finding me on the other side made his smile drop dead. I smiled at him.
"Hey, Rahul." I tried to start a conversation.
"Who is it, Rahul?" Chachi asked, (Chachi in Hindi means Aunt) coming out of the kitchen to welcome her guest. Her eyes shined brightly, with I don't what, on seeing me. I don't think she is happy to see me. But still, I entered.
"The miss goody two shoes who else!" Rahul muttered, which I happened to hear. ' So, I am still an unwanted guest, as always.'
I smiled brightly at Chachi and went in. Things have changed a lot since I left. The carpet, the sheets, the screen, everything is different. But one thing is still intact, the aroma of her food. She cooks really well. I loved her cooking skills.
I remember, once, on Rahul's birthday, she had baked a cake, dipped in Vanilla and strawberry icing. I had helped her decorating the cake. It was delicious, that's what I imagined because not a single piece was left for me. Haha.
"Anju, bachu(kid), how are you?" She came and pulled me into a hug.
"Oh! Now you would love her, I don't stand anywhere for you right! How will I? I was never enough for you." Rahul screamed and rushed out of the house banging the door shut while leaving.
"RAHUL!" Chachi shouted behind him. She left a sigh when her voice landed on deaf ears. "Anyway, how was your interview?"
"It was nice," I told her feeling guilty that what just happened was because of me, "I'm sorry about that."
"Oh, that, it isn't your fault. He is just... He... I don't know what's wrong with him. We did everything for him, but he...I just don't understand what we did wrong?" Chachi let out a sob and started to cry. I on my impulse pulled her into an embrace and tried to soothe her.
"Chachi, it's alright. You never told me about this. What happened? Why is Rahul doing so? What happened to him?" I asked her in a low tone.
I didn't want to hurt her, despite the fact that she had hurt me, in the past. But everyone has there own reasons. Though they might not be enough to justify your sins. Now she wasn't like she had been with me earlier. She had changed. That's what I hope.
"I don't know Anju, he comes home drunk, and fights with me and your chachu (Uncle), and blames us for everything. Is it our fault that he is not scoring good, he doesn't study well! We even did what he wanted, we sent him to the college he wanted to join but he..." She trailed off before continuing. "And here, you, who never received any help from us, we were always worse with you. And even then you landed in the best college in the country and now giving an interview in one of the best firms in the nation. We feel very proud of you dear. We are very proud." I made her sit and went in to fetch a glass of water for her.
"Do you know when we got the news that your mom and dad..." She contined. "I was reluctant to let you in, you see we were concerned about Rahul, we didn't want him to feel insecure. But I am glad that you came in with us." I handed her the glass.
"Chachi, let the old things remain inside their graves, pulling the old corpses out from their shell will only make things worse. I have moved on, it's time to forget those things and guide Rahul properly. After all, I don't want my brother to suffer more." I smiled at her and sat beside her.
