(Cali's P.O.V.)
The fire crackled with little pops as everyone around it sat on a blanket. I couldn't bring myself to pay much attention to anything other than the fact that in 3 hours, Jacob was going to be on a plane to go home, and in that moment, I was very aware of his presence tonight as we sat closer than we had all summer. His arms were wrapped around me tightly, as if he was afraid I wouldn't spend this last night with him. I admit, after spending a whole summer with a totally gorgeous AND single boy, that I was guilty of leading him on a little bit too much. After all, he was only gonna be here for the summer, and I wasn't a 'fling' kinda girl... and I wasn't the kind who had long-distance relationships either. I told myself that I wouldn't get too close, but I did. And now that I had, I knew I was going to spend the next week in tears.
"I'm gonna miss you so much," he whispered in my ear. I smiled.
"I'm gonna miss you too," I said looking up at him. He was also smiling.
"Can I ask you a wierd question?" I nodded. "If I were to kiss you right now, what would you do?" My heart started to race as he leaned in.
"I'd kiss you back," I whispered nervously. He touched his lips to mine. I nearly forgot there were people around us as I turned and wrapped my arms around his neck and twisted my hands in his hair. But then, I pulled away and looked into his eyes. "Jake, we can't. I like you too much. I don't want it to hurt anymore than it has to when you leave." My words were barely a whisper.
"I know..." He sounded sad but he smiled.
"I'm sorry." I rested my head on his chest and he began to play with my hair.
"It's not your fault. I like you too, you know. It'll hurt just as bad for me when I'm away from you." I smiled and kissed his bare chest. "One day, the next time we're together, you owe me." I looked up at his face to see him with a smirk on his face. I must have looked confused, because he started to explain. "For not kissing me. The next time we meet, I demand a kiss!" I giggled. "And... maybe more," he murmered in my ear. My heart thudded inside my chest. I was totally smitten for this boy, and that was tottally crazy.
