When writing a Fanfiction, how do you avoid the clichés? And is there any such thing as too cliché Clichés.
One thing that the publishing world will teach you is that not all clichés are bad. In reality, it's actually more likely for a reader to pick up your book if it contains one of these. Although this probably sounds redundant, it's also very important for you, as the writer, to add your own spin on things.
For example, one of my published novels entitled, Don't You Remember, features a castaway theme. And it's exactly the cliché theme you're thinking about. The one with a plane crash, a deserted island, and a Lost reference. However, the cliché theme tends to involve strangers who crash on a deserted island, learn to live off the land, and fall in love. In my story? Not so much. For the sake of time, I'll point out some things that made my story original.
First of all, my main characters already knew each other. They had a long history, a not-so-typical romance, and a sudden separation. The male character is a doctor in medical school and the female, a pediatric nurse. Regardless of their feelings toward one another, they are the only medical personnel on the flight and must take care of the dozen injured passengers alive. Later on, you'll find that a mental illness and a spiritual theme surface. There're about a hundred other things that make this story different, but I'm pushed for time.
So, regarding your question, you don't really have to avoid clichés. Sometimes, they can actually help you. As for are the too cliché clichés, that would occur if you just rewrote some other book. The key to using them to your advantage is to put your spin on things. Originality is important in every book, no matter the genre.
I sincerely hope I have helped you in some way. If anyone has other questions that I haven't answered yet, feel free to ask them below. ❤
