It was a rainy night, not much of a breeze for a Kentucky night. The door bell rang. A loud buzz filled the halls of the orphanage.
" What could somebody want? This late at night?" The house mother muttered to herself. She pulled on her robe and walked from her room across the hall to the front door. Outside was a young child, around age five or six just sitting on the pavement. She was in a coat and had a blanket and stuffed lion with her. In her hand was a note. As the house mother stepped outside to pick her up, a car pulled away from across the street.
With a scowl on her face, the house mother waved at the car as it drove away.
" Probably for the best" said the house mother, picking up the child and taking her into the house. She sat the young girl on a chair in the dining room, and took the note out of her hand.
Dear House Mother,
This is Sparrow. She is 6, and her birthday is September 25th. We tried to raise her, but we are very poor and don't have enough to support a young girl. We don't want to fill out our paperwork because we don't want her to find us if we aren't ready. We may be back for her at a later time, but if someone wants to adopt her, we won't stop them. Please take good care of her.

Signed,
Serena and Ash

The house mother sighed and put the note down.
"Well Sparrow, this is you're new home," the house mother said to Sparrow. "We'll give you a tour tomorrow, but it's late. Let's go up to your room."
Young sparrow followed the house mother to the room full of 3-9 year olds. She tucked Sparrow in, closed the door, and went back down to her room.
"Ugh, even more paperwork" she muttered as she climbed into bed.   Just as she was settling into bed, there was a loud boom of thunder.  The house mother jumped and laughed at herself.

There was a loud boom of thunder, and sparrow sat up. She didn't like new places. Why had her parents left her? Where was she? She looked around the room, and could hear faint crying. She slowly got out of her bed and walked around to the other beds in the room. As she made her way around, she heard more crying. When she walked to the bed closest to the door the kid looked out from under their blanket. Sparrow sat on the bed next to the child and slowly took the blanket off of her. It was a three year old. She remembered what her mother used to do to calm her down during storms. The girl scooted over to Sparrow and Sparrow hugged her.
"Shhh, it's okay" she cooed." What's your name?"
"R....re...reighn" the girl said through her crying.
"Hello Reighn, I'm Sparrow" Sparrow smiled at Reighn.
Sparrow suddenly sat up, hearing more crying. She walked over to her bed, Reighn clinging to her arm. Sparrow grabbed her blankets and went to the middle of the room. She laid them out nicely and took Reighns blankets and laid them on top.
"Reighn, I need you to do something for me"
Reighn looked up at Sparrow with big eyes.
"I need you to walk around the room and figure out who is crying. Shake them and tell them to grab their blanket and pillow and come over here. Can you do that for me?"  Sparrow said.
Reighn nodded, and took a deep breath.
"Thank you, don't worry, I'm right here." Sparrow reassured her.
Reighn walked to the left end of the room and walked to each bed.  Every child on that side was awake, some crying, some just scared. They all grabbed their stuff and headed to the middle of the room. And the same happened to the right side of the room too.  There were about 14 kids in all, including Sparrow.
Sparrow took half of the blankets and laid then on the ground in one big pile, like a mattress.  All of the kids were standing around whispering, confused on what this new girl was doing.
"Okay, everyone pair up" Sparrow said to the kids. They were confused, but did what they were told. Eventually everyone was paired up. Everyone except Reighn. Reighn looked up at sparrow and asked if they could be partners.
"Of course" Sparrow smiled down at Reighn.
Sparrow told the kids that partners would be sharing a blanket, and they could sit or lay on the blanket-mattress thing. The kids laid down or sat on the mattress and Sparrow started her plan.
" Okay, we're gonna go around the room and I want to learn your names. We'll start with me and we'll go to Reighn and so on." Sparrow said. "I'm Sparrow, and my favorite animal is a lion"
"Im Reighn, and my favorite animal is a... A.... A panda!"
"I'm Brendon, and my favorite animal is a cheetah"
"I'm Jade, and my favorite animal is a turtle"
They all went around in a circle giving their names and favorite animals. By the time everyone was done with their names and favorite animals, the rain had stopped.
"Well everyone, I hope I can be friends with all of you, but I think it's time for us to go to bed." Sparrow yawned, and stood up. " Everyone grab your blankets and pillows, and if you want I'll tuck you in"
The kids stood up and grabbed their stuff.  Some of them wanted to be tucked in, and Sparrow tucked those kids in. Lastly, she  tucked in Reighn.
"Thank you" Reighn said. "The house mother would have never done anything like that for us"
"You're welcome Reighn" Sparrow said. " Now, go to sleep." Reighn nodded, and laid down.
Looking around the room, Sparrow smiled. "Maybe I'll like it here." She walked over to her bed and climbed in.

Sparrow sat up. I can't believe that I remember all of that. That was, what, 10 years ago? Man I've been here for a long time.  She stretched and hopped out of bed. As she started to get changed, she heard the door bell ring. The walls were paper thin in this house, so she could hear the conversation from her room.
" Oh, hello. I'm guessing you're Mr. Bowlmer? Hi, I'm Ms. Buctem, the house mother."
" hello Ms., I'm here to talk about possibly adopting one of the children."

Aye cliff hanger. Sorry this is late. If you're reading this, you are officially one of my children (Jenneh is already one tho, and Riv is my bby child 😂) so hello children, I'm your new mother. Anyway, I hope you liked this my children, if you for some reason don't follow me on Instagram, it's rylie_the_meme. Again, any feedback is appreciated. ~rylie_the_meme
