He answered on the first ring. The butterflies turned into bats when he agreed to meet me and talk. I don't know if I miss him or if its like seeing him all over again but I want to know about my mother. She played a factor in Joe moving on, forgetting me. I have Zach but right now it feels like Im deprived of myself.
The cafe door swings open letting in heat and the smell of coffee grows smooth around me.
"You look-what happened to your face?" He asks, settling into the booth. My concealor failed me.
"I tripped going into my room. You know I've always been clumsy. I ordered you a cream cheese bagel and pumpkin spice coffee." I smile. His favorites. He smiles, sipping the warm coffee.
"You know me."
I do.
"I wanted to ask about my mom..what do you know?"
"Well, nothing really. Just that Dave got in some trouble. He looks terrible, drinking all the time."
I sigh, rubbing my face. I grimace at the tenderness.
"I'll give you some money, to help her."
He nods, sipping the coffee. I want to drink a beer or two.
"You like him?"
"Who?"
"That guy you talk to..The one who put that bruise on your cheek."
My eyes pop out and my mouth goes dry. How would he guess that? What made him assume..
"Joe, we were drunk."
"Bullshit."
"Look, I dont need you to judge me. Okay?"
"Bullshit."
Anger fills me. I want to slap him. Scratch his stupid beautiful eyes out. He stares at me, a smug look on his face. That stupid smug look on his beautiful face.
"Fuck you."
I stand up and march past him. I can't be around him. I camt breath the same air as the man I still love.
