The next week passed in a blur.
I led worship at church the Sunday after I found out that I had cancer. It was the emotional I had ever gotten leading worship before. I sang a few songs, but the one that really spoke to me was Give Me Faith.
During the bridge of that song the lyrics are, "I may be weak, but your spirit is strong in me. My flesh may fail, but my God, you never will." I could feel Good speaking to me during that song. I was very weak, but God is ALWAYS with me.
After service I went to talk to my best friend and fellow worship leader, Jamie.
"Great job today, Nora!" He said, cheerfully.
"You too!" I said, giving him a hug.
After talking for a little bit I pulled him aside. "I need to tell you something," I said.
"Sure. What is it?" He said with a concerned look on his face.
"I-I h-have cancer," I mumbled. Jamie just stood there in shock for a few minutes.
"Oh my gosh," he said as he stood there staring at me, "What kind?" He finally asked.
"Osteosarcoma," I said, "I will have to have chemo and have my leg amputated."
"Oh my gosh, Nora, I'm so sorry," he said as he gave me a hug. I felt his tears dropping onto my shoulder.
"Thanks," I said, hugging him back, "You're the first person I've told outside of my immediate family."
"Why haven't you told your friends that you are always texting?" He asked, trying to lighten the situation.
"I don't know how they will take it," I confessed, "And I trust you."
Then he started sobbing. "I'm so sorry, Nora," he said through his tears.
"Is everything all right?" Chris, Jamie's dad, asked.
Jamie slowly lifted his head and looked at his dad. "N-N-Nora has cancer, Dad," he choked out before bursting into tears again.
"Nora...I'm so sorry," Chris said, "What kind is it?"
"Osteosarcoma," I said, "I have to have chemo and my leg is going to be amputated."
"Are you going to die?" Jamie said out of the blue.
Chris gave him a look. "I honestly don't know," I said, "I'm just trying to put my trust in Jesus."
"Well, we better get going," Chris said, wiping a single tear off his cheek.
"Am I still riding with you?" I asked.
"Yeah," Chris said as he walked over to his wife, Carolyn.
"Ready to go?" She asked when we had walked over.
Jamie nodded, none of us were able to stop speak.
Once we got into the car, Carolyn asked, "What's up? I've never heard any of you this quiet."
"I have Osteosarcoma," I said, finding my voice again, "I'm going to have my leg amputated along with chemo."
"Nora," Carolyn said, "I'm so sorry. I had no idea."
"It's okay," I said, not wanting to talk much more.
"Are you scared?" Jamie asked from his seat next to me.
"Yes," I said, burying my face in his shoulder and crying for the fifth time that day.
"Do you guys want to stop at Noodles & Company?" Carolyn asked.
Jamie looked down at me, "It's up to you," he said.
"That sounds great!" I said, trying to sound enthusiastic.
We walked into Noodles & Company and ordered.
"Can we please just forget that I have cancer for right now and have a normal meal?" I asked.
"Of course," Chris said.
And we talked for the rest of the day. About big things, small things, whatever kept or minds off the elephant in the room. By the time we were finished eating, it was 3:00 pm.
We left Noodles & Company and drove to my house.
"You can fight this," Jamie said as we pulled into my driveway, "And know that I will always be there for you."
"Thanks," I said as I started to undo my seatbelt, "You're an amazing friend."
I gave Jamie a hug. "Thanks for the ride," I said to Chris and Carolyn.
"Anytime," Carolyn said.
"We'll be praying for you," Chris said.
"Thank you," I said, "It means a lot."
"Goodbye, Nora," Jamie said.
"Goodbye," I said as I got out of the car and walked into my house.
I got in the shower and cried while the water poured down on my head. Why me? I asked God.
And I fell asleep with that thought, Why me?
