Josephine and Charlie had made it to Rumlow's side fairly quickly, and when he angrily demanded where they had been for so long, Charlie had thought up a fairly ingenious answer and replied with, "Getting some annoying civilians out of the way."
Sure, it wasn't the best excuse that he could have come up with, but he had been put on the spot, and Josephine hadn't said anything yet, so it had just slipped out. Luckily, Rumlow was far too busy with his little 'underground' criminal organization to really care what their excuse was. Plus, him being the big bully that he truly was, found it entertaining that 'his men' had been picking on some of the civilians of the area.
So, for the past three hours, Josephine and Charlie had been stuck at the side of Rumlow as he viciously barked orders at his other men, who immediately ran to fulfill whatever Rumlow needed. It wasn't nearly as suspenseful or action packed as you might think. In fact, both Josephine and Charlie
were rather bored with it. They hadn't gotten close enough to the jet to tie up Rumlow, and there had always been other men around, so they hadn't got to knock him out yet, either.
Ugh, this is taking forever. Charlie inwardly groaned, but stayed in the exact same position that had been for the past twenty minutes, which was standing there, waiting to fire his gun if the time came when he needed to. Even though Fury said that Charlie needed to take any of Rumlow's orders and do them just as he wanted them done, Charlie wasn't exactly one of those people who listened to Fury, or did what Fury told him to do.
And he was pretty sure that Josephine wasn't either.
Charlie was brought out of his wandering thoughts of boredom by the sound of Josephine's voice over the comm. She sounded eager, like she had been waiting forever. Technically, she had been waiting a pretty long time, even though it wasn't exactly forever.
"Charlie, the men are leaving. That leaves us with Rumlow, right? So that means we can-" She began, speaking fast, but Charlie cut her off. He hadn't realized how much he was really going to enjoy beating up Rumlow until this moment. And he knew that Rumlow completely deserved it, so he could do it without regret. Rumlow had killed hundreds of people, left innocent children as orphans, and bombed cities that he had 'seen as a threat'.
"Knock him out. Right. And easily get him to the ship after that because the men are all going to right wing, when we're on left." Charlie whispered back. Even though the helmets were thick and bulky, there was still a chance that Rumlow could hear what they were saying through them, so Charlie kept his voice down.
Both Charlie and Josephine watched as the men filed out a small door to the left, armed with guns and all. After Rumlow was locked away in a S.H.I.E.L.D. HyperCell, they would have nothing to look up to, no orders to take from anyone. All in all, they would be useless without a leader, except for maybe the few that could be converted into decent S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
A cement panel slid itself back into place after the last man had filed out the door. Charlie glanced at Rumlow out of the corner of his eye, not moving his head, even though it was difficult to see
out the sides of the visors. If they wanted to have a good strategy they couldn't give away their position quite yet.
Rumlow laughed a little, the sound echoing slightly off of the walls, and Charlie winced. His laugh was horrible, like a dying goat mixed with the screams of the souls from the Underworld, but that wasn't what they were supposed to be focusing on at the moment.
He suddenly stopped laughing, "You two. You are going to shoot every civilian within a mile of here."
Charlie stiffened up. Sure, he had expected there to be a few casualties, Fury had even said there would be, but this wasn't one of them. He wasn't going to go out and shoot down completely innocent civilians, ripping from them their normal lives, just because Fury said that he was supposed to take every order from Rumlow. Even though Charlie did believe that sacrifices had to be made, that was one he was not willing to make. For anything.
"No." Josephine's clear voice rang of the wall, and Charlie immediately looked over at her. What was she even doing? Charlie had thought that maybe they could go and act like they did it, knock some other men out, and come back in their uniform to chain up Rumlow. He was not planning on making a death wish by refusing an order from one of the most well-known murderers on the planet.
"What did you say to me?" Rumlow snarled through his crooked teeth, leaning closer to Josephine, who was dwarfishly small compared to him. Typical villain. The snarl, the whole leaning in closer; everything about Rumlow was predictable. Which means he was conquerable.
Josephine spun herself around to face him, whipping off her helmet swiftly so that her face was completely visible as her brown hair fell down to her back. She looked Rumlow right in the eyes, not even wincing at the one side of his face that was completely burnt up, and gritted her teeth, repeating what she had just said, with more determination in her voice,
"I said no, you murdering freak."
