An Alchemists Past, Friends

After that first day, me and Nate became rather good friends. We would always talk be it about alchemy, drawing, books or just general school and house life. It was always fun hanging out with him and he seemed almost obsessed with the subject of alchemy. There would even be days where we talked about nothing but alchemy. However I eventually grew bored of just talking about alchemy. I mean if he loved it so much seeing it in action might help him learn about it faster and would free up some of my time. So I asked him to come over to my house so he could see some of what I had been studying.

The next day he met me at my house almost shaking he was so giddy and excited. So I took him through my home and down to the basement. In there were shelves filled with cores of all shapes and sizes, several multicolored and odd shaped bottles and of course empty containers for any new breakthroughs. His face lit up at the sight of it all and I could instantly tell from the look in his eyes that this would be a long day of nonstop questions. However despite my anxiousness for the following days events I sat down at my desk and got to work. I grabbed a jar of cores, a red bottle that looked like it was made out of rectangular bubbles and a blue rectangle bottle with a plant the looked like sea weed with blue flowers in the shape of butter flies. I spilled the cores out onto my desk and began to lick them and place them on my arm.
"Eww why are you doing that?" Said Nate his eyes filled with wonder and confusion.
"It activates the cores" I said continuing the process placing the cores down the length of my fore arm.
"Well why are you putting them on your arm? And why so many and why that pattern?" He seems as clueless as a 4 year old right now. Do human parents really never teach their kids about any part of alchemy? It's so common place that you think schools would even include a course on alchemy for humans where they could learn at least what is used in it but guess not.
"I'm using my arm because I control the mussels in my arm therefore I control the energy that the cores are exposed to. I'm using this many and in this pattern because I felt like it." I kept my voice calm as I answered his questions keeping he majority of my focus on the cores. Then I took the blue bottle and removed the plant.
"This is Blue Vanessa or the butterfly bush. It's a very common base used in combined magic. The plant can be used as a source of oxygen by simply breathing through the stem but the water in a vessel containing the plant can heal as well as stabilize unstable elements. I then grabbed the red bottle and held it firmly in my free hand.
"This is HELL or healing, eradicator, linger, liquid as you can probably tell it's dangerous. Simply smelling it can knock you out for 4 hours at least. Ingesting a drop of it can put even a witch into a coma, so don't touch this." I said placing the bottle back on the desk. I then took a deep breath and grabbed the Blue Vanessa water and poured a good amount of it into my mouth. Then I slowly set down that bottle and grabbed the HELL quickly popping off the corked lid and pored 3 drops into my mouth as well.
"Ash what the hell are you doing!" Nate yelled but I held up my finger signaling him to shut up. I then blew out a gaseous substance onto the cores on my arm. I then used my hand to contain the gas as it surrounded and flooded into the cores. Once the gas was absorbed and the cores held a green tinted aura to them, I lowered my hand and let my body relax as the cores slipped off of my arm.
"A....Ash that was amazing!"
"Thanks but I'm not done yet. We still need to figure out what these do."
"Wait what? Are you saying that you've never made these before?"
"Yeah pretty much. I wanted to try something new and they actually worked."
"Um well what happens if something doesn't work?"
"Well that depends most of the time they don't form into a gas or the gas simply is absorbed by the air rather than the cores but I've heard that they can blow up."
"What! So if this didn't work right we could have died!" He yelled
"Of course not. Well it's very unlikely since these are relatively safe ingredients, but that's not important it worked were safe now let's figure this out." He seemed some what hesitant but he still walked to my desk to observe. I then picked up the cores and placed a few in my hand creating a pattern like a star, then I gently placed my hand onto the cores and concentrated. As I focused my energy on them, a blue aura started to form like smoking flames surrounding my hands. The blue flames licked the inside of the cores and started to gather what they could do. It wasn't long before their purpose was obvious to me. The flames soon went out after I broke my concentration and I looked at Nate my face full of awe and wonder.
"Th...These cores.....give the power of alchemy to non alchemists." I said getting more and more excited about my creation. "Nate do you get how amazing this is? Now you don't have to just watch me do alchemy, you could too. And then humans could gain equal ground with alchemists and we could all use our power to further the world." I was practically ready to jump for joy, until I saw Nate. He seemed rather defensive and started to slowly back away. "Nate what's wrong? Don't you see how great this will be for everyone? I mean just think about it. You could use alchemy. We could use alchemy. Come here don't be scared all I have to do is put one of these on you and then you'll have so much more power, and I could teach you everything I know." I said holding the cores in my hand as I got up from the desk and walked towards him. However as I did so he started to back away faster.
"Ash no I don't want to learn that. You're taking this to far. This is to much for me I.. I need to go." He then bolted up the stairs but the door was locked.
"Ash let me out I just need to wrap my head around this. Please let me go." He shook the door furiously but when I got there he seemed almost paralyzed with fear.
" Nate I'm so sorry. You're right this is to much... I should have known better. Forgive me" I said as my knees buckled and I sank to the floor. However he then knelt down with me and hugged me tight.
"Hey Ash, it's okay I forgive you. I just need a bit of time."
"I should have known better........... To think that a human could understand this much power." I said reaching into my pocket. I pulled out a core with a lavender purple aura and pressed it onto his neck. He fell to the floor unconscious his arms letting go of our embrace as his mind faded into several hours of oblivion.
"Forgive me." I said as I took 2 more cores from my pocket. They glowed a light yellow color with purple lines flowing through them. Empty memory cores. I then gently pressed the cores onto both of his temples and placed my hand on his forehead as I chose what memories to take away from him. Tears ran down my face as every memory he had of me were put into the cores. Everything from the first word he ever said to me to the last moment of fear he had before falling to the floor where he laid. It was for his own good that he forgot. After all, who would want to stay friends with a witch when it's so much easier to never have met one. I then took him into my arms and carried him back to his house. I laid him on his bed and just before I left, I threw one of the memory cores under his bed. Even if he gains those memories back they will just be blurred images and choppy sound. But maybe one day after he discovers it,he will think of our time together as a dream. But I will never see him again, so I hope that he treasures that dream. A dream with a girl who he doesn't know, a dream with so many things he'll never understand, a dream that he'll wonder about and look for answers to. Maybe a dream will be best for us both. Because he will always wonder and he won't have to suffer in the future. Whereas I will always know and I won't let him suffer in the future, for the life of a witch is a life that people who see you are scared. And the last thing I want for my only friend, is to feel what I feel. The last thing I want for my only friend, is to know what I know. That last thing I want for Nate, is to live a life like me. And he never will, cause he'll never know. Wonder expands the mind, but knowledge breaks the heart.
