*FLASHBACK*

Christmas eve 1856

“so after suffering the most boring meal of the year, I get dragged to church” I wined at Damon.

“and I have to put up with more complaining” he shrugged as we walked arm in arm towards the church. We were once again walking at the back of the line, taking our sweet time.

“you cannot honestly be saying you like the Christmas eve tradition” I scoffed.

“no I don’t, but you being here makes it more entertaining” he smiled.

“it’s pretty much the same as any other Sunday night, except christmasy” I muttered.

“I can’t wait to see you open your present from me” he grinned.

“what did you get me” I asked.

“that would ruin the surprise Rosa” he chuckled, knowing that I would want it now.

“tell me, tell me, tell me” I begged.

“you only have to wait a few more hours” he smirked, then we arrived at the church.

The service was slow and the same as last years... pointless. My papa then had the brilliant idea of having all the founding families back to our house for more drinks, dancing and general celebrating.

“let’s show them something they would never have seen before Rossi” Damon grinned.

“ok” I laughed. He grabbed my hand and led me to the dance floor. We then started to dance against the beat of the music, moving randomly. I could distinctively hear my mamma chuckling with my papa while Mr Salvatore stared on disapprovingly. People started to clap us and we carried on to dance without any rhythm.

“They seem to like it” Damon chuckled to me.

“who cares, this is the most fun I’ve had for ages” I laughed.

“in public” he added.

“in public” I nodded then spun into him.

Eventually everyone left and it was just my family left sitting in the living room, Lucinda and her parents included. My papa was talking to her father, my mamma was talking to her mother and I was left sitting by the fire talking with her.

“you excited about tomorrow Rosa” Luc asked.

“not as much as I was last year” I sighed.

“I find that as I grow older Christmas loses its magic” she agreed.

“but then you rediscover it again when you have children” Maria whispered to us.

“time for bed, I think” my papa announced and we all nodded in agreement.

I laid in bed and impatiently waited for everyone to fall asleep so that I could sneak out and meet Damon at our spot in the woods by the river. Eventually I jumped out and put my thickest clothes on, remembering that it was snowing outside, then snuck down to the stables and grabbed Lightning.

“Take your time Rosa” Damon laughed as I arrived.

“sorry” I rolled my eyes at him then jumped down and walked over to the river bank, leaving him to tie Lightning up for me.

“you’re here now, that’s all that matters” he muttered then I felt something cold and wet hit my back. I turned around and saw a small snowball lying on top of some of the snow.

“this is war Salvatore” I grinned.

I lost count of how many hours past, but I never grew tired of my snowball war with Damon. Eventually he charged at me and knocked me into the snow, sitting on top of me.
