Chapter 5 - Waking Up

(Trace's POV)

"IT'S GETTING HARDER JUST TO FEEL ALIVE!!" screamed BMTH, waking me from a dreamless sleep. I sighed, sitting up and rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. It was 7:00 in the morning and I had to go to school. I looked over at Elye, who slept through the screaming wake up call. I threw my legs over the side of the couch and stood, my legs slightly unsteady first thing in the morning, not to mention I had a sudden need to pee really badly.

After I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth, I woke up Elye, who was now sleeping through a pretty, dreamy song by Autolux called Future Perfect. I gently shook her awake and she made a soft, incomprehensible noise of protest, which made me laugh. I grabbed her blankets and pulled them off of her, the cool air of the room replacing the space where the blanket kept her warm.

"Fuck me! Not cool, Trace. Why'd you do that to me? Don't you love me?" she asked begrudgingly.

"Of course I do, that's why I'm waking you up so you can get ready for school. You need an education you know."

"I know, I know Trace, you're right, as per usual. Which totally blows and I hate you for it but whatever," she said as she slid out of bed and walked to her bathroom.

After we both got dressed and ate breakfast, we got our stuff and headed out the door. Apparently, I was driving not only Elye, but also my little sister, Tori.

"So mom said I had to ride the bus, but I figured you would be at Will's. So when I called Will and he said he hadn't seen you since the party, I was like, well damn. And as I turned the corner to wait for the bus, I see your truck at Elye Brasseaux's house. Tell me, Tracy, why you're at Elye's house. You haven't even talked to her since grade school. You know Karissie isn't gonna be happy when I tell her you were bangin' the neighbor girl," my sister said rudely, not caring that Elye was standing right next to me. I turned to look at her, her face was red from embarrassment.

"Tori, I told you before, Karissie is not anything to me, she's just your obsessive best friend that wants to jump my bones. I told you, I seriously hate her." She made a grunting noise, angry at my personal rudeness, which I guess is a trait in my family. Fun huh?

"Uhm, so what's going on exactly?" Elye asked quietly.

"Nothing Elye, just my sister being an ass hole." I said, grabbing Elye's hand and moving past my sister towards my truck. Tori turned and glared at Elye and I before starting toward my truck as well. Elye climbed into the passenger's seat and slammed the door in my sister's face. Tori stood there with her mouth open. She glared at Elye, then at me, before she opened the back door and got in. We sat in stony silence for about two seconds before Elye turned on the radio and blasted it as loud as it goes. I didn't recognize the song, but Elye and my sister did. They began to sing along with the song, rather badly and completely off key. I sighed and laughed to myself, they didn't even realize they were singing together.

We pulled up to St. William's Catholic High School about 10 minutes later, the school looking sparkly-new in the sunlight as the sun gleamed off the glass. It shined brightly in my eyes as l searched for a parking spot. I pulled up next to Sidney Cobden's new Lexus IS F, which she got for her sweet 16. It reeked of new money sitting next to my F-250, which was pretty nondescript in south Louisiana. I sighed as Tori jumped out, squealing over her boyfriend. l grabbed my book sack and Elye's before getting out and facing my friends and the day.

"Hey Trace, sup niggastick?" yelled Dyrrek across the parking lot. l grabbed Elye's hand and headed towards him and the rest of my friends.

"Hey D! Sup Chuck, Allan, Paul, and Jerry?" I said as they looked quizzically at Elye. She stood slightly behind me, shy around my super excited friends.

"So Tracy, who's the pretty broad and why is she hiding from us?" asked Chuck.

"I'm not hiding, " said Elye. "You guys are just a little rawr." They looked at her, then at me before the first bell rang for homeroom. I kissed Elye goodbye before heading to my suddenly least favorite class.

She greeted me at the door, her vague face of hatred was the first thing I noticed. Then I noticed the boy hanging off of her. She faked a giggle, looking squarely at me. Her eyes threw daggers, and almost felt the need to move out of the line of fire. I just glared back, fighting the urge to pull the slobbering boy off of her and ravage her. It was disgusting and awful but I just wanted her.

I slid into my seat and prayed the class would fly by.
