CHAPTER 2 SCHOOL

Math was the first subject and let me just tell ya, it's not my beat subject. Mr. Lopez, the math teacher, hated almost everyone in his class that didn't even bother to try. "Johanna!" he barked "What is 8-1×0+2÷2?". "Uhhh" I totally hadn't been paying attention. "Four!" I blurted out, I knew I was wrong. " Johanna, did you even try?" he asked. I didn't want to get on his bad side."Uhh y-yeah" I studdered. " I mixed up the division symbol with an addition symbol." I  said innocently. " Well, okay as long as you tried."he stated blankly. I turned around to look at Peyton, he was smiling crookedly with one thumb raised. I smiled back.

After third period, I had lunch with Peyton, my friend Jessica, her boyfriend Devin, my sister Beatrice (or Tris), and Peyton's best friend Cody. "Guess who was daydreaming again?!?" Peyton asked jokingly nudging me in the shoulder. "Jo" my sister whined "You've gotta start paying attention! Mom's gonna end up finding out and you'll be dead!" " But Beatrice I-It's not my fault!" I protest "I was..." I sigh "I just hate the subject and...I just can't keep up with everyone!" I wail. "I can help you!" Jessica volunteered "Then again I'm not so hot at that subject either." "Oh it's okay babe I'll help you" Devin said happily. Then quickly shared a kiss. "Well you could ask if Peyton could help you," Cody suggested "He's like a computer!" "What about Peyton?" asked Peyton. "I-I was wondering if you could help me on my math since you're some sort of math whizz." I asked as polite as I could even though I didn't have to. "Uh sure, meet me after school." he said "Okay".

Finally, the last subject of the day! Which is my favorite, art! I walked over to the empty canvas. As I stared at it I imagined what I could do with it. "Okay students lets begin!" Mrs. Brady said in her amazing Spanish accent. " Since today is Friday, we are going to do something different," she said enthusiastically " We are going to have a short contest." Ohh how I love contests on art! "Now there's a catch, you can only use the items I give you!" "Any questions?" she asked politely "Yes, Parker," "Do we at least get paint? I mean we have canvases and all" "Yes and you guys can borrow only if the person will let you." she stated. Oh great! Now if Parker gets a color I despratley need, I will have lost the contest. Parker is my mortal enemy. He once invaded my locker by squirting bright orange paint through the slits, destroying everything that was in there! The only reason I found out, was because Peyton secretly caught it on video on his phone. We later showed Principal Aspen and all Parker got was a 3 hour detention!

"Okay class is everybody ready?" Mrs. Brady asked. I hadn't seen what I got! I turned around to find 11beautiful colors and 4 sizes of thin tipped brushes. My colors included lemon yellow, sunset orange, orange, scarlet, strawberry red, crimson, black, white, sky blue, cobalt blue, and forest green. Five seconds later I snapped out of my somewhat trance and smarter to paint.

I had no idea what I was doing! My hands were randomly moving. Paint squirting out of the tube, my brush moving like lightning. When I finish I step back to see what I had done. I was astonished! It was a amazing, it was double sided, it looked like a fire on one side then transforming into flowing water. There were coals at the bottom, fire blazing up and blowing to the right. In the middle the colors faded in to a cobalt ocean. White tinted the water adding shine. It was marvelous!

" Class I am inviting three students to judge the art  work plus me," she says "I have chosen Peyton Masen, Beatrice Torres, and Elizabeth Edwards."  Now I'm definitely going to lose, I dumped Elizabeth in mud today so she probably hates me right now. Wait, she follows Peyton everywhere, so that means that if Peyton chooses mine, then so will she! "Yes!" I blurted out. I immediately covered my mouth. "Yes what?" Mrs. Bradley asked. "Yes... I'm glad that we get to start!" I say in my most enthusiastic voice. Peyton and Tris just smile at me. " Okay then let's get started!" By the time they made it to me they were pretty bored. They stood in front of me staring waiting for me to present. "Show us what you did" Mrs. Bradley said blankly. As I pulled off the cover ,as we were supposed to use, their faces lit up. Peyton, Tris, and Mrs. Bradley stood mouths hanging, eyes wide looking at the painting. Elizabeth as always was standing nose up and arms crossed. Off to the side I was blushing, apparently it was noticeable be cause Will, Parker's friend, started laughing quietly.

Finally it's time for the judging. Each of the 'judges' has to write the person's name on the card for whom they want to vote for. "Okay, are you students ready to see the results?" Mrs. Bradley asked. "An overwhelming low 'yes' came from the class. "Okay!" the 'judges' held their cards up. Yes, I got three out of four votes. The other vote was for Parker, who of course was voted for by Elizabeth. "The winner is Johanna, Johanna showed great color contrast in her painting as well as making it interesting." Mrs. Bradley started "Johanna, would you like to say a couple words about your painting?" I knew it wasn't a question, but an order. I stood up and started what I think was talking," Uh...well I...uh" I studdered nervously "I decided to roll with the colors I had," I said "Well isn't that talent!" Mrs. Bradley exclaimed.

After class, Peyton pulled me aside. "Hey" I said kind of startled. "Um, do you mind if we study at your house? 'Cus Lilly's home tonight and she'll get the wrong idea." he said warily. " Sure!" I said. Then we strode down the busy hallway to get our stuff.
