CHAPTER 4 HIM
Peyton, Beatrice and I got on the bus and headed to school like a normal, but it wasn't normal. Tris and I took a walk outside, mostly because she wanted to know about Peyton and me. I told her that he had a huge crush on me and the about the kiss and how I told him I love him. She was pretty phyched, though she started giving me what felt like a lecture, talking about how she always seemed to never find love. It was really boring.
As we walked along the path I kept seeing flashes of black whooshing past me. "Hey Tris do you see that?" I asked her warily, "See what?" "The black flashes" "Jo, you must be going craz-" she trailed off as we both looked ahead. Before us stood the man who left us, the same man everyone feared. That someone, was my father. "What are you doing here?" I questioned "I thought you left." almost immediately Tris's hands were on fire, mostly because she was angry. Come to think of it, more than angry, enraged. "You left us fatherless without a man in our life and then you just show up?!" she practically yells at him. I take some water from the drinking fountain and extinguish her hands. "Thanks" she says in a voice low enough so only I could hear. "Beatrice, Johanna, I...I can explain" "No one calls me 'Beatrice' anymore" my sister sneers. My dad just looks at me ignoring Tris. "So Johanna, you've always been the nice one, am I right?" my father said trying to sound sweet "Did you just insult Tris, cause' I remember you being just as mean" I say in a matter of fact tone. "Ooo, looks like someone brought out the fighter in you" He says trying to sound convincing.
"What doing here?" I ask again trying to fight the anger boiling inside me. "What, I can't visit my own daughters after 18 years?" he asks "Just go we didn't want you to be here anyway!" my sister spits out like venom. "C'mon Tris, we gotta get back to class" I say as we're walking back. But when we get past the first tree that surrounds the path, it falls in front of us covered in fire, blocking us. As we're about to run to the sides those two trees catch on fire so were closed in a giant square of flaming trees. "Ya know," my father says evily " You shouldn't walk out of a conversation" After the last words left his lips a fire ball came hurling towards us. Without thinking I immediately somehow made some sort of sphere made of water. When I released it my sister had a shocked expression on her face. "Well, looks like someone isn't afraid to show what she can do" my dad smirked. At that my sister sent a frisbee of fire right at his head. Just at the last moment did he move. He put his hand to the side of his head, she had managed to singe a line of hair off. "You better watch it" he warned "I'll be back" the fire soon disappeared and so did he.
"Jo, Beatrice!" Peyton yelled sprinting towards us a few yards away, "What happened?" he questioned us while enveloping me into a tight hug. "Him" was the only word I could say "Who?" he replied worried, "Our dad" Beatrice said with disgust, "H-how did he find you, y-you haven't seen him in 18 years or contacted him at all" Peyton studdered his voice filled with anger and terror. "He knows everything" My sister says fighting back the tears. I've noticed over the years what mood she's in and what she's going to do. Peyton pulled her into the hug. I started sobbing into his shirt. My sister, trying to stay strong for me on the other side of Peyton. He is my best friend...no, he's my boyfriend, he loves me, and I love him, And that's that.
"Names please" the lady at the front desk asks me. "Johanna and Beatrice Torres" my sister cringes when I said her name. It links her to my father whom she despises. "And you?" she directs towards Peyton. "Peyton Masen" he says blankly. Once we all were signed out, we hopped into Peyton's car, which he keeps there in case of an emergency, and drove to my house. Surprisingly, my mom came home early, so we ended up telling her all that happened. About the surprise visit and the talk we had before the fighting happened and of course the fighting. Peyton had a shocked expression on his face which I didn't know why. Then again, we didn't tell him about the fight. I walked over to him and hugged him tightly, closing the space between us. He hugged me back. "Also he said 'You better watch it, I'll be back'" my sister said trying to imitate my father's gruff voice. My mother had a sad look on her face. "Mom, what's wrong?" I asked concerned. "It's happening" she replied.
