Kane's POV

"Promise not to lose your shit?" Blaine and I are walking through my territory checking the boundaries . He's been a good friend all these years, so It's a little difficult holding back my snarl of irritation. I step through the trees into a snowy clearing. I keep walking and nod, knowing he's not going to shut up until I answer him.

Blaine stops walking suddenly. I turn to him, noticing the stiffness of his posture, the stoic expression on his face. "I smelled something on your mate." My eyebrows raised, but honestly I'm not surprised. Wolves were known for their sense of smell, whereas a were-bear's hearing is excellent.

"And?" I coax him along impatiently. "It would seem your little mate has been intimate with a wolf. Its really faint, but she might know more about our kind than she let's on."

A white rage fills my mind, my canines extending. A mutt touched my mate. Is that why she ran? Does she know about us, and if so, how much does she know? What if she was scared? What if she thinks I'm a monster?

Questions and rage fill my mind. "Hey, calm down man, the odds are slim that she even knew his true nature at best. Plus it wasn't exactly a recent encounter, the scent was faint. I just thought you might want to know." I take cleansing breathes, allowing myself to have peace settle on my shoulders. I learned this meditating with my grandfather. When I open my eyes, I meet his stare dead on.

"We need to find Aubrey. There hasn't been rogues in this territory for decades. We need to rule out the coincidence of her and the rogues showing up in the same week." He nods hesitantly and we make our way back into town.

-*-*-*-*-*

Aubrey and Annie laughing from inside her loft drifts to my ears as I climb the stairs. "-and then Blaine threw a frog in his swim trunks!" I sigh, of course she would tell that story. Blaine chuckles, nudging my shoulder with his. "That was awesome! Your face was priceless." I nod, frowning. "The beating you got was great too." Blaine's grin dropped as he pouted, following me up the stairs.

I slam the side of my fist twice on the door. It opened revealing my angel. My frowning angel. She has her fist on her ample hip and a scowl between her brows. "I'm going to close this door so you can knock politely this time." She says in a low husky voice.

She slams the door in my face. I growl, turning to look at Blaine's amused eyes. Are all females this way? "I like her." Blaine grins at me with a shrug. I sigh, raising my knuckles to rap on the door three times. She opens the door grinning. "Well, Kane, what a pleasant surprise! Come in." My mouth twitches as I try not to laugh. She will be an excellent mother to my stubborn cubs. Stepping through the door past Aubrey, I feel a quick tap on my right buttock.

Did she just-? I turn to look at my little minx of a mate. She's scowling at Blaine. I should have known. I round on him irritated. "How the hell did you get alpha?" He shrugged innocently. "Its a gift." I'm silently fuming as I go to sit next to Annie. Blaine claims the floor in front of his mate, who immediately runs her fingers in his hair.

Aubrey sits on the arm of her loveseat across from us, face blank. She looks at Blaine right in the eyes, who tenses. Alphas hate eye contact like that. Its a challenge, though I know he's trying to take the fact that Aubrey is a human into consideration. "So." She begins, shifting uncomfortably. "You're an alpha." We all freeze, Annie doesn't look surprised at all.

Blaine slides a careful glance my way before answering. "Yes I am. But not of this territory, mine is about thirty minutes drive north of here." Aubrey nods in understanding. She lifts her green eyes to mine and I feel suspended in time for a moment. Would I always feel like this? Like I'm home and floating away at the same time.
