Aubrey's POV
As the day progressed on into the evening, we all sit around laughing and talking. I could tell Jason and Kane are becoming fast friends. Jason would tell Kane about how we met at a foster home when we were sixteen and all of the funny stories about when we were growing up. Every time Kane would laugh heartily at our antics, then give me a look I couldn't quite put a name to. Affection maybe? I hope its not just because we're mates.
I immediately push that thought away. Mates or no, I'm just glad I have him. Its when we are all settled in comfortable silence around eight, watching a movie, that Jason breaks our happy, content little bubble.
"Aubrey." I glance to my left at Jason. His expression is no longer carefree, instead a scowl graces his features. "What's wrong?" I ask anxiously, sitting up straight. Kane rumbles a low growl from his chest.
Jason sighs running his hands over his face. I've never seen him like this. "There's something you both need to know. I think Chris has been sending rogues after you, Aubrey. That wolf I terminated talked about more coming. I believe Chris may be the money behind all of this." He stops, glancing at Kane. "You need to stay with her every second of the day. You and I can take turns if you wish." Kane nods in agreement, taking my hand.
"I would be more than happy to, that is," he kisses my hand,"if that's alright with you, angel." I smile up at him, glad I was asked at least, though I knew I wouldn't have had a choice either way. Jason pretends gagging, open mouth with one finger pointing down his throat. I roll my eyes at his antics."You know it is. But you and Jason are going to be exhausted."
Looking between the two men, I began thinking of something. Annie.
"You know, I wonder if Annie would want to come stay one night with me and Jason?" Kane grins along with Jason. "I'll arrange it." Kane whips out a phone, as Jason whispers in my ear. "Who's Annie?" I giggle nudging him with my elbow. "She's a friend of Kane's mate. She is super nice." He chuckles. "You sounded like a cheerleader for a second." He pokes me in the head, making me glare.A sigh comes from Kane, wearily putting away his phone. "She said she's coming tonight." Jason stands, stretching. He reaches over and claps Kane on the shoulder, laughing evilly. "Better get used to sleepovers, bear, what if you and Aubrey have daughters."
As soon as he says that I'm blushing to my roots. "Jason!" I all but scream at him. What the hell was he thinking!? Kane however was looking at me with predatory eyes. "Once we're mated she'll be pregnant all the time." And there I go picking my jaw up off the floor! "Kane!" Jason is now in hysterics, collapsed on the couch, over my red blotchy face.
I start punching him repeatedly on the arm, with no effect, when the doorbell rings. Jason leaps off the couch, still laughing at me, to open the door. Blaine stands before Annie, nose slightly lifted to catch the scent. He growls menacingly at Jason, who is not affected in the least.
Jason glances at Blaine from head to toe appreciatively. "Nice. How can I help you this evening?" He leans on the doorway sensually. Annie goes into a fit of giggles immediately, Blaine looks shocked. I walk over shoving Jason aside. "Hi, Blaine, sorry about Jason." Blaine recovers fast with an easy smile.
"That's alright, I know how gorgeous I am." He puffs his chest and flexes his arms. Annie rolls her eyes, "Shut up. Hi, Jason, I'm Annie." They shake hands, making small talk. I glance at Kane who is frowning at whatever Blaine is saying.
"What's going on?" I ask tentatively. Blaine heads to the kitchen without another word, Kane glaring after him. Annie, sensing trouble, follows after him. I look at my mate expectantly. "I want to bring Sebastian in." I nod, not quite understanding why that's such a big deal. "The Caster? I thought he is your friend?" I ask.
"A Caster? Are you sure, Kane? You know what they're like." Jason says. Okay I'm still lost. "Can someone explain please? This human standing here doesn't understand." I say motioning to myself.
Kane sighs, pacing in his spot. "Casters have been known to play both sides of the field so-to-speak. There are a few different types of them, but most only want things for themselves. Sebastian is different." Jason doesn't look convinced, and frankly neither am I.
"Do you think this is bad enough that we need a Caster's help?" I feel as if they've been holding out on me, and dammit it's my life on the line here.
Kane simply nods. Jason claps his hands together loudly. "Well I dunno bout you guys, but I need some girl time. Out boys!" He yells out. Blaine exits without a word, leaving a red eyed Annie behind. I weave my arm through hers in a sisterly manner, making her give me a small smile.
Kane stands in front of me, well more like over me. A soft touch of his callused hands to my cheek, bring his mouth gently down to mine in a soft sweep of the lips and he takes his exit. I sway on the spot, ignoring Jason's shit eating grin.
"Girl you've got it bad!" I nod smiling as I hear another scratch on my closed door. Opening it I let Grim in. Grim goes to the bed stretching out on his back. Annie claps her hands together. "So Jason, how good are you with hair?" Jason scoffs incredulously. "Look my pretty, just because I'm gay, and may think you're mate is sex on legs, does not mean I'm a fucking fairie. Not all gays know how to do that shit."
Annie laughs. "You're completely right, I apologize for offending you." Jason nods graciously toward her, "You are forgiven." A heartbeat of silence, then. "So how good are you at hair." Jason sips his drink he had poured. "I'm fucking amazing with hair, how do you want it?" Annie squeels in delight before perching on the stool in front of Jason. I laugh at them, and for a while we make small talk and laugh.
"Why was Blaine so upset about Sebastian helping us?" I ask Annie as Jason pins her long red locks up in some kind of clip. Annie looks down at her lap. "Its a long story, Aubs." I reach out rubbing her shoulder. "I told you a long story when we first met. Do you remember?" She nods, tearing up. Ah shit I shouldn't have pushed her.
"When Blaine was a new Alpha of our pack, a Caster was paid to curse us. Apparently the old beta wasn't fond of Blaine taking over. Couple hundred dollars later, and the Caster cursed me." Jason inhales a sharp hiss.
"Shit, Annie. What did they do to you?" Jason asks softly, rubbing her arms. Annie breaks down crying, putting her face in her hands.
When she calms a bit, she speaks. "I was given the curse of the desert." Jason squeezes his eyes shut as if in pain for her. I shake my head confused. "What does that mean?" I ask her softly. She looks down in her lap still.
"It means I can't have children. In the Were world, Aubrey, if I can't bear offspring to carry on my husband's genetics, I'm a dud. A useless mate. Blaine says he doesn't care, but I see it every time we see a baby or child. I feel what he longs for. And lately I don't know if what he truly longs for is me any more."
"Can Sebastian reverse this?" I can't help but to cling to hope. "I don't know. Blaine has forbidden me to go near him." I scoff. "Fine. Then I'll ask." She looks up at me sharpley. Hope, anguish, fear, I see them all flash through her wet eyes. "Oh Aubrey!" She launches herself across at me knocking us to the floor. She repeatedly kisses my cheek. "Thank you, thank you!" Jason laughs.
"Wet T-shirt contest!!" He yells, just when a bullet pierces Annie's chest. Blood splatters onto me as I cry out in horror. "Annie!" I shreak, pushing her on the floor covering her with my body. A thunderous growl emits through my apartment. I look up just in time to see a huge black beast burst out of my front door, leaping into the cold winter night.
