youngjae was a happy child. for the most part, all of it was playing and having fun. doing the normal things a child would do. he loved dressing up in costumes and playing around with his friends. one day he was a pirate, the next he was a fairy, and then a singer. he was such a ray of sunshine, always being so positive and smiling all the time.
but this all took a turn when he started growing up. through his last years of elementary school and through middle school, he was teased and bullied for the way that he acted and how he was quote on quote, "too girly" or "not man enough".
it all was too real for youngjae. he was always so used to people accepting him the way that he was, and he would do the same. but having so many of his fellow classmates say such rude things to him... well, it hurt. along with the bruises and things thrown at him on the daily.
so during summer break after his eighth grade year, he decided he was either not going back to school, or coming back different.
his mother wouldn't allow him to not go, so he settled for the second option. he convinced his mother to let him go to school the next year under a different name, a different persona. his mother didn't want to see her son in pain anymore, so she went with the whole thing.
youngjae then got to work. searching the internet for the perfect new name, spending hours on websites and testing out names to see if he liked them.
he finally settled on a name after days of research. he liked it, and his mother liked it too.
choi youngjae was now going to be kim jaeseok.
then, he worked on changing his look. he would have to take a complete opposite turn from what he was now– a happy, cheerful boy who practically radiated sun beams. since he used to dress up and play roles so much as a child, it wasn't that hard to decide.
kim jaeseok was going to be the opposite of choi youngjae. dark clothes, arrogant attitude, didn't give a single care about anyone or anything. a person who instead of seeing the world in bright yellows and pinks, saw it in greys and dark purples.
and thus he started shopping. collecting the perfect collection of leather jackets, dark jeans, grungy t-shirts, black shoes and many more.
the look was finally starting to come together once he put the clothes on. he already felt different.
one of the final touches was hair. he dyed his bleach blond hair to a dark brown, almost black. he also added makeup to distort some of his features that people knew him by.
the first day of his first high school year came quickly, and youngjae– well, jaeseok– was ready. as he walked into the school, he felt a few pairs of eyes on him. but it wasn't like usual, like last year. he used to walk into school and get tripped almost immediately. but not today. he walked in smoothly, making his way down to his first class. he slung his backpack down lazily, sitting down in a random seat next to a few people.
"oh," he heard a voice say from behind him. "you must be new. do you need a tour of the school?"
youngjae looked back, it being a girl who used to bully him. he rolled his eyes. "no. screw off." he says, clicking his tongue and turning around. he had been working on his new voice to talk to people, and he was doing pretty well.
"what–" she says, huffing. "i'm mina."
"i didn't ask for your name," youngjae says, scoffing. "go away."
"what's your name?" she says, continuing to pester him.
"why do you care? i said go away."
"just tell me," she says, whining.
"jaeseok. now stop taking to me." he says, putting ear buds in his ears. he couldn't hear what the girl said after that.
the rest of the day went smoothly. teachers called him by his new name, not even recognizing that it was him. he was proud and happy that he has pulled it off.
he stayed in this new persona for a long while. until he graduated, actually. people just through that choi youngjae moved schools, and kim jaeseok was a new kid.
he had been acting in this persona for so long, that he decided to keep it that way. kim jaeseok was here to stay and choi youngjae was gone.
