Why me?

Part 4

  Ms. Radeon gave each pair a number and we all were to report to the baby that had the same number. We were handed the number 13 and I walked towards the baby girl robot. It seemed so real and next to it there was a bag with diapers, baby milk, medicine, clothes, and a blanket.  Erick had stayed behind with his friends and I was left alone in front of the child as the rest of the pairs went to their babies.
         "Erick go to your partner and decide a name for him or her it should say on the card." The teacher said motioning towards me.
       "Miss it's just that my friend Erick here wants to disown the child and baby mama" Yoandri said with a smile. "My apologies nerd girl" Selena said also smiling.
      My cheeks reddened and I felt
somewhat weird, but I understood.
       "It's fine miss I'll do it." Erick spoke up and walked over towards me.
        "Okay good now in the bag there is a blanket, diapers, clothes, and medicine. This robot can tell when it's cold, it will breathe and it also will need to eat and poop." Almost all the cheerleaders made faces at the last comment. Erick looked down at his phone and texted away. "It will also cry, you need to tend to the baby if it is ignored your grade will go down. For the rest of the class I'll let you decide the name and when you guys will plan the schedule to take care of the baby. If you guys have any questions feel free to ask. Also the car seats are in the closet so please get one." She said walking around the lab.
        " Okay so what do you want the name to be?" I asked Erick but he must've not heard since he kept looking down at his phone. "How about Stephanie?" I asked once again he kept looking down. " Ok great glad we agreed so I'll just keep her the whole time and make sure to give you credit at the end so you pass." I said slightly annoyed he kept looking down at his phone. His black hair not even moving.
           "Mugamy" he said suddenly still not looking up.
             " Excuse me?" I said shocked that he actually talked.
                "Mugamy that should be her name." He said finally looking up. His blue eyes looking straight at my plain brown ones.
                  " ok that sounds good"
         " Let's meet on Saturday at the Pastor Park to plan the schedule." He said as he stood up and walked back towards his friend not expecting me to answer but do it.
       "Class change of plans you will get the baby on Monday, but still make sure to meet this weekend in order to be prepared and hand in your baby's name slip." Ms. Radeon said.
     I handed the name slip to the teacher as the bell rang and walked towards the student parking lot. Dawson had texted me earlier to meet him there. On my way I passed Selena and the squad as the made comments about what I was wearing and how I looked. I looked down and kept walking towards Dawson's car. I stepped in and immediately heard baby laughter. " So about taking care of Denali can you start today?" Dawson laughed as he turned around starting the car. "Of course, hi baby girl."
Denali was a year old and was born on May 15. Her mother and Dawson were dating for over a year and one night went to a party and got drunk and one thing led to another. After Denali's birth her mother got into an accident and died. Dawson was still in school, in my grade to be exact which just happens to be a senior, and also has a job. We drove off to my house and he dropped off me and Denali. " My shift ends at 7:30 so I'll be back for her around 8."
     "That sounds great, more time to spend with my baby girl."  I said as I picked up the tiny brown curly haired girl from the back seat. I grabbed her baby bag and took her in.
         We ate some strawberries that were in the fridge and played with her stuffed animals in my room. It was around 6:30 and she had fallen asleep in her blue pajamas as my mom came home.
      "Who's baby?" She asked staring skeptically at Denali.
         "I'm taking care of her for extra money mom." I said calmly.
         "She's adorable make sure she's covered so she doesn't that sick." She said moving closer covering Denali with some of my blankets." Denali shifted making herself comfortable.
     I did some extra credit homework and any upcoming class assignments while waiting for Denali to wake up.
      As I was finishing the Biology project Denali started crying and my mom rushed in as I picked Denali up and she rubbed her tiny fist against her eyes.
        "She reminds me of you when you were little. Those were the good days when I would look down and see your little brown eyes staring back up at me as if I was your hero."
     My mom said as I looked down at Denali who stared at me with her little green eyes.
      "You still are" I mumbled wanting her to hear but hesitating.
       A car horn beeped outside and my mom looked questioningly at me.
  "It must be her dad." I said gathering her things up and putting them in the bag.  And walking her outside to see Dawson's car in my drive way. I walked towards the back seat with Denali in my arms. I set her in her car seat making sure to buckle her in tight. "Thank you so much. Here's a 30 for the favor." He said with a twenty and ten dollar bill in hand.
" It's fine getting to spend time with her is enough pay for me."
I said closing the door and walking towards my front door where my mom stood waiting. I waved as they drove into the night.
