That was the beginning of the end for me, although I would have never realised it then. "Experts" believed that the outbreak was small and contained, affecting only downtown Tale Hills. I don't know how you can have experts on something that happened no more than twelve hours ago, but we put our lives in their hands.
Tale Hills was a safe area back then so there wasn't an issue when my mom left to make sure my dad was okay. The lab was on the other side of the city so she would've been back only by the end of the week. The news had advise everyone to go on with life as usual so I still went to school. Everyone was oblivious. The breakout was a lot more serious than what had been broadcasted, too bad we figured it out too late. That weekend my mom didn't come home as planned. I couldn't reach anyone from the lab or that might have any information on what happened down there, but believe it or not, that isn't the bad part.
I barely had a week without hearing from my mom or dad before things totally went to shit. That's when the law enforcement or whoever was in charge started taking safety precautions. Our small neighbourhood was closed off completely, as were surrounding areas. There was a base set up along what we would call the fence line. That's where the Protectors headquarters were. At the time the Protectors were only the fittest, strongest people from throughout the country, their main purpose was to protect those within their sector. It was a good system, but that was back when there was still hope. Time seemed to pass so quickly that if you blinked the pool of survivors reduced by half. It was a blur to me really, the panic, the unknown. I remember how one day the school went on complete lockdown, no one going in or out. Being in there, we didn't know what else was going on. We stayed like that for weeks, just locked up. That's when the Protectors come to fetch all remaining survivors, which is now known as the last recruitment. Turns out the trained Protectors had mostly washed out and they had been making these recruitments, basically taking the best people in the sector to defend the front line. The Last Recruitment turned out to be all that was left.
It's safe to say we didn't have a fighting chance. Fifty odd teenagers and an array of adults. Teachers, Doctors, parents, even grandparents.
Those poor suckers that did get infected, well I would say that they turned into zombies, but that would be ridiculous. This wasn't some TV show, but yeah, they went completely insane, with an unhealthy appetite for flesh, and now they walk the streets. I would say they hunt for prey if they weren't so stupid.
The "Infected" as we so originally called them, slowly took everything over, the Base being the only safe haven.
To put it mildly things looked bleak... but that was three years ago.
