"Hey, get your lazy ass out of bed!" was the somehow not equivalent of waking up to birdsong. I took a second to let my eyes focus to see Haven shaking me by my shoulders.
I grunted at her in response.
"It's already past eight-thirty, and you know it was our turn to take inventory. If I have to clean the lavatories because of you I swear-"
"Oh come on Haven! I'm terribly sorry we all cant get up at sparrow fart to stick our head up Gov's ass! He's probably not even awake himself!" Yes I was grouchy, I was allowed to be. No one likes a rude awakening.
Haven flared her nostrils at me, which is a tell tale sign that she WILL beat your ass, but this morning I was standing my ground.
"What did you just say to me ?! What the F-".
"Whoa guys, the war-zone is outside. Lets keep it that way," Olivia interrupted. The only thing Olivia hated more than Infected was drama in The Base, but she never lost her cool.
Haven took a deep breath and turned swiftly to leave.
I didn't hate Haven. We were not enemies or rivals. Quite the contrary actually. She was my best friend. They all were.
When worse turned to worse Haven stepped up. Although The Base did have a leader (it would be anarchy without one), Haven was the one that kept our group in line. It was by some dam miracle that our whole group of friends had made it this far, and although I would never admit it, I think Haven was a big part of that. She was a rock. I was just stubborn.
Like her the rest of the group each had something that they excelled at. Haven and I disagreed about her talent though. She says she's master of the shotgun, I say she's a hard-ass. Aria can kill anything with her bare hands, being the queen of hand-to-hand combat. Raine can build an explosive device out of a smelly sock and a battery before you can even smell it coming. Skylar chooses to use an old baseball bat, but man, she's never missed her intended target, and if you see Olivia with a dagger, that's the last thing you will ever see.
Begrudgingly I got out from under the sheet that was providing any warmth it could and jumped to the floor. I had won top bunk from Raine in a game of cards.
Being the end of the world and all we didn't exactly have a boutique to pick out the cutest gear from. Everyone had only one complete pair of clothing as far as I knew. Yes, it's disgusting but what choice did we have? Perhaps I could give you closure and say that everyone smelt the same and that we were all used to it. That would be a lie though. If your clothes did get desperately disgusting you were able to was them in an old animal trough, but who knew how much water we had to spare.
With those depressing thoughts I trudged out of our room, only to see Gov in the common area. Gov was short for governor. I don't think anyone actually knew his real name. Rumour has it he was a commander for the armed forces before he was recruited as the head of this base originally. He used to be really grouchy, shouting orders at everyone, but a lot has happened since then. Although he would never admit to it, he has a soft spot for the youngsters, especially those of the Last Recruitment. I think he wishes it was different for us.
He sent me a stern gaze, telling me he knew I was late for inventory. I sheepishly turned to head out towards the shed. As I pushed the double doors apart, I halted slightly. It saddened me when I caught sight of the old rusted fence, remembering how we had to rebuild the fence when the Infected got in. We had lost a good number of people that day.
The harsh sunlight made we squint to see across the grass. Hanging out the door of the shed, one of the many different building actually in the Base, I could see Raine waving her arms at me, telling me to hurry up. I could only sigh and force myself across the meters of dry, dead grass.
Raine and I had known each other the longest, becoming best friends way back in first grade when she had stolen my seat, so it was fair to say she was used to my morning moods and was confident I wouldn't stab her.
"It amazes me how you can sleep so long when impending doom is just outside that gate,"she nudged me playfully as I walked through the wooden doorway.
"Don't push your luck. I need my beauty sleep." She just laughed at my salty retort.
"If that's the case, you should definitely go back to bed then," I hear Skylar say. My eyes hadn't adjusted to the darkness yet, so instead of waiting to glare at her I just lifted my middle finger in her general direction.
"So, have you guys actually started anything, or have you spent all morning thinking of that snarky comment?" I hear a few chuckles.
"We got last weeks inventory list from Gov. Now we just have the tedious task of counting all this shit again," Aria said with a role of her light blue eyes.
"Let's get too it then."
