The group ran as fast as their legs ould carry them. Unfortunately, night had fallen and there was no way they'd be able to get back home without the possibility of running into the hat. They couldn't call for help, either. Hoopes left his phone in the car and Matt didn't have a signal. A few minutes later the group reached an old abandoned mansion. Matt and Sahara objected to going inside, but it was so dark they had no other choice.
Cola pushed on the heavy door and it creaked open. Everyone walked inside and, using Hoopes' little keychain flashlight, looked for other sources of light.
"Hey guys," said Hoopes. "I found an oil lamp. Do any of you have a lighter?"
"I don't, and I doubt Cola or Sahara has one either." replied Matt.
"Actaully, I do!" said Sahara. She laughed lightly. "Always be prepared, right?"
Sahara handed the small lighter over to Hoopes and he lit the lamp. The group found their way to the sheet-covered living room couch and each took a seat. Hopefully they'd make it through the night without any food or water.
"So, now what?" asked Cola.
"Not sure," Matt replied. "all I know is that I don't want to go outside."
"True."
The conversation died down, a thunderstorm rolled in, and the group almost drifted off to sleep, but an hour into their technically illegal stay at the abandoned mansion, there was a knock on the door.
"I'll get it." said Hoopes. Sahara followed behind him with the oil lamp so he could see. Everyone was hoping it was a neighbor who came to help. but the whole situation seemed like a nightmare, and then things just got worse when Hoopes opened the door.
"He-- OH NO!"
Sahara stumbled backwards, nearly dropping the oil lamp when Hoopes pushed her to go the opposite direction. Outside the door was the red hat, slightly soggy from the rain.
"THE HAT!" she shouted. "RUN!"
Hoopes and Sahara ran through the kitchen and down the stairs into the basement. It probably wasn't the best choice, but hey, they thought the hat would never find them behind so many doors. Matt and Cola jumped up from their places on the couch and ran down a dark hallway.
"Watch where you're going!" hissed Cola.
Matt stumbled around until he finally found the button on Hoopes' keychain flashlight that he grabbed before running for his hair's life. "I'm good. I got it."
Cola shook his head. "It's a little bit late. You already stepped on my foot twice."
"Sorry..."
"It's fine, let's just keep moving. I don't want the hat to find us."
The pair walked for a while, going in and out of random doors until they managed to get to an upstairs bedroom.
"C-Cola?"
"What's wrong?"
"I'm kinda scared."
Cola's facial expression instantly softened. "Aw, Matt..."
"I know this whole thing is stupid. I mean, it's a hat. What can it really do? But... I don't know..." Matt sighed.
Cola sat beside him on the dirty lilac bed and pulled him in for a hug "You'll be okay, I promise. I won't let anything happen to you."
Matt smiled and gave Cola another hug, causing him to blush slightly. The pair laid beside each other on the bed and waited for daylight to come.
