"Summertime sadness. Su-su-summer time, summer time sadness." Cara sang into her ear.
Karlie shook her head in amusement as they zoomed past a couple of men screaming at each other on the street. The afternoon sun had set in and the streets were blazing but there was no escaping the winter wind and the light frost that had lasted through the morning.
No one could tell that the two women were on their way to give hell to a thug if they spotted them now. Chucker looked like a clueless toddler singing her rhymes while Knockout navigated through New York traffic. They passed through Broadway without a single halt. "Hey Lizzy, feeling up to a taco?"
"We have somewhere to be, Chuck." Karlie rolled her eyes as she stopped in front of a red light. "Alright alright, relax." said Cara, putting on a thin American accent.
Karlie watched a brown haired man cross the street just before the light turned green and it took all her effort not to gas it straight away or even gasp because it was Josh in a suit, looking nothing like he did at the gym that morning. Thankfully, she had her helmet on and wasn't in the front of the traffic so he didn't notice her. The fighter wondered what he was doing in this part of town when she realised that she had no idea what he did for a living.
Accelerating once more, she decided she would ask him the next time. She felt guilty all of a sudden, having known him for almost three years now. She realised she knew nothing about him. Wow, Karlie. What a great friend you are.
"Yep, this is it." Cara stated, dismounting the bike while Karlie parked. They were on a dingy street in Brooklyn now. The door was defaced with graffiti and the windows of every building was shattered or broken. Most of the houses here weren't the most habitable of places in the city but Karlie remembered when she used to be a resident of this area, three blocks down. However, it wasn't as bad as the house they were at.
"This place looks like it's been through a few fires if you ask me..." Cara stated, examining the terrible condition of the building. "I almost feel bad for the poor chap."
"Don't get sympathetic, Motherchucker. Who knows what we'll have to do..." Knockout patted the shorter woman on the back before taking the lead and striding up the front stairs. The elevator was out of order of course, so the odd pair was forced to take the stairs to the only apartment that seemed to have a door that was whole. They had to step over mounds of debris on their way but the space in front of this door seemed cleared out. A good indication that there was someone living inside. "There wasn't a buzzer downstairs..." Karlie whispered, looking through the keyhole as if it would help. Evidently, there was no light on the other end to see anything. "We should just knock." Cara said affirmatively, clearing her voice before knocking twice.
"Why are we knocking on his door when we used a sledgehammer last time?" questioned Karlie, finding this rather funny. "Well, Lizzy. This is a business endeavor and we prefer to keep it on the down low." Cara said matter of factly, seemingly shocked with her own words. She rapped on the door a little louder this time. There was no sound on the other end, still.
"Guess nobody's home." Karlie shrugged, looking through the keyhole again. "I guess so." They weren't whispering anymore. Chuck looked towards the taller girl, silently asking her what she wanted to do next. Knockout directed her gaze on the door lock and back again. Understanding, the Brit slowly took out a bump key from her pocket. This girl has everything apparently...
It took only a second to unlock the door but Cara took care to do it as quietly as possible. The door opened with the faintest click but it didn't swing smoothly enough for it to be soundless. The creak from the door triggered the sounds of movement from a door in the far corner of the apartment. The girls made eye contact for a moment before picking up their pace. Karlie made a run towards the door, throwing a kick hard enough to put a hole through it. Chuck gave her an eyebrow raise before slipping in her bump key again, chuckling hard at the dumbfounded look on the taller girl's face as the door opened. "There's always an easier way." The Brit managed to say before their attention was captured by the disappearing figure out of the window down the fire escape on the back. Classic. Knockout thought, before bundling after the man, Cara in the lead.
