What did he just say? I was in the middle of writing when he asked THE QUESTION that came out of nowhere.

“What?” I raised an eyebrow

“Do I have to repeat what I just said?”

“Apparently not.” I closed my notebook then looked at him. EYE TO EYE.

“And?” he asked impatiently. Now he has the nerves to be impatient?

“I guess…….I guess you could.”

He smiled at me. He looks like a total idiot. Very like a total idiot. And I was just there standing, doing nothing. I’m feeling uneasy already. So, what now?

“Iris!!” I can hear Amanda’s voice then she appeared right in front of the two of us. She looked from me to Riley.

“Am I interrupting something?” She raised an eyebrow

“Actually, not.” I said and grabbed her arms. “So Riley. We’ll go ahead.”

“Sure.”

When Amanda and I are at the locker area, we were ready to change for our cheerdance costume. I checked my reflection at my mini mirror when I felt Amanda’s heavy stare at me. Yes, I know she’ll fire me a lot of questions.

“Okay what is it you’re gonna ask Amy?”

“I know something was fishy between you and Riley. What was it that the two of you were talking about?”

“He…umm…asked if he could court me.”

“What?!?!” She fanned herself and gave me her wide blue eyes.

“He just asked and I said he could.”

“What?!?!!!” She said again. Is there no other word that’s gonna come out of her mouth but WHAT? Then it hit me.

“Wait. You like him?” I asked and she scoffed.

“No.”

“Then why? Why react as if it’s the end of the world?”

“For one thing, Riley’s my cousin.” She placed an arm on her hips

He’s her what? Riley’s her what?

 “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Umm, you never asked. But that’s not the topic here. Why did you say yes?”

“Well, I need to look for someone. Remember the date?”

“And here I am thinking you were just kidding about that?”

“Who says I was kidding?”

Amanda looked at me for a while.

“But why Riley?”

“For one thing Amy, Riley’s in love with me.” I looked back at the mirror and tied my hair into a ponytail.

“That’s the thing Iris. You’ll end up hurting him. You are just using him for your own good. What about his feelings? Don’t you care?” Amanda sounded frustrated now. Always the good girl.

“Are you saying this because he’s your cousin?”

“No.”

I sighed. “Amy, trust me on this. I’m not gonna hurt him. He’s only my date. No strings attached.”

“Oh fine fine. But remember that I warned you okay?”

“I know Amy.” I smiled.

Time to have a background check on the best fish I caught. Riley is like the tuna in a pool of sardines. This is gonna be great.
